The Stockholm Convention has a far reach worldwide, it is ratified by 186 parties, who continue to work to protect human and environmental health from the dangers of POPs.

In response to the global problem of POPs, the Stockholm Convention undertakes vital work, taking measures to reduce and eliminate the releases of POPs into the environment.

They can be produced intentionally (for industrial applications, for use as pesticides) and unintentionally (as a byproduct of industrial processes).

The Stockholm Convention on POPs is a global treaty to protect human health and the environment.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are hazardous chemicals that threaten human health and the planet’s ecosystems.

POPs remain intact for a long time, widely distributed throughout the environment, they accumulate and magnify in living organisms and are toxic to both humans and wildlife.

Last week brought to a close the 2025 UN Ocean Conference in Nice, France. Rolph Payet, Executive Secretary of the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Convention in his closing remarks of the conference highlighted, “Marine pollution knows no borders. It demands coordinated, cross-border solutions.”

This week in Zanzibar, a dynamic hands-on training brought together 48 local agricultural experts, and lead farmers from Unguja and Pemba to learn how to make farming safer and more inclusive, especially when it comes to using pesticides.

From toxic chemicals and persistent organic pollutants to the relentless tide of plastic waste, pollution is one of the most underestimated drivers of the environmental planetary crisis.

At the 69th Council Meeting of the GEF, Executive Secretary of the BRS Conventions, Rolph Payet, stressed that “Pollution must no longer be treated as the invisible crisis."

Through the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions, companies have the opportunity to shape international norms that increasingly govern supply chains, trade, and innovation.

At the event “U.S. Engagement in Environmental Multilateralism: What’s at Stake?” hosted by USCIB, Rolph Payet, Executive Secretary of the BRS Conventions emphasized that U.S.A. industry must stay engaged in global chemicals and waste governance — a sector with a multi-trillion dollar exposure.

Environmental governance is no longer a side conversation — it’s shaping the future of global trade, innovation, and industry resilience.

He met with Jan Dusík, Deputy Director General, DG Climate Action in Brussels. They explored the links between pollution and climate change, the importance of coordinated action, and innovative solutions like pollution bonds to finance a cleaner future.

Rolph Payet, Executive Secretary of the BRS Conventions, met with MEP @juttapaulus.bsky.social Paulus (Green Party) to discuss outcomes of the 2025 BRS COPs and EU initiatives on chemicals and waste. They emphasized stronger global cooperation, science-based action, and a toxics-free future.
