Incidentally, I think they shifted her into being the star of her comic by somewhere around the tenth issue. Maybe earlier. She wasn’t just a host very long.

Glad to be of help. Creepy and Eerie were both horror anthology series, and Vampirella started that way with Vampirella being a “host” like Uncle Creepy, Cousin Eerie, The Crypt Keeper, etc.
Vampirella eventually evolved into the star of her own book - although still anthology stories featuring her.

It also severely ignored the rise of the single parent family in the wake of the war - abandonment issues and the anger and frustration that went with that. But, yeah, a lot of ego there too.

I remember going to the Schoolastic Bookfairs in elementary and middle schools and gettting the Famous Monsters of Filmland there. The first time I came across a Warren mag I was about 12 or 13 at the local summer fair. A retailer had grab-bags and it was in one. It changed how I looked at comics.

Have you read The Ten Cent Plague? Great read about the roots of your mother’s issues w/ comics. Deals w/ how comics were blamed for the increase in juvenile delinquency post-WW2, and how it tied into McCarthyism, and the rise of the Comics Code Authority. I think the author’s name was David Hadju.

I love the old Warren mags. I’m a little younger than you - born in 70. Whenever I visited my grandparents as a kid, my grandmother would give me a dollar or two & I would run to the newsstand around the corner & buy comics. Batman for me, Archies for my sister, and whatever else caught my interest.

Fascinating time for comics, too. Right around the launch of the Warren horror-themed magazines that ignored the CCA. The big publishers started testing the limits of what the Code allowed.

Adventure /Weird Adventure Comics had some great covers done by Aparo. Also really dug his Batman work.

I know I’ve seen coffee table books for comic art, and occasionally for specific artists, but I’m not sure I’ve seen one specific to covers. I love the covers of the old horror and sci-fi comic mags - Creepy, Eerie, Vampirella, Heavy Metal. Love how it’s where sci-fi and horror meet pin-up.

And I adored Simon Bisley’s covers for Doom Patrol back in the 90’s.

Comic book geek that I am, I love great cover art. Could probably write a whole treatise on it. Instead, just going to post some that I love…

Some of the ones here are definitely ones that I would also recommend. I would add in the single issue Detective Comics, “The Night of Thanks but No Thanks” written by Harlan Ellison. It’s a brilliant, tongue-in-cheek look at an uneventful night while Batman is on patrol.

Such a beautiful building. I got a great shot a couple years ago during a snowstorm just ahead of Weihnachten. Sehr sehr schön.
