I really, *really* recommend trying Week Without Driving if you have a car at home. It's very revealing! People with cars at home are using a much different transit and pedestrian system than people without them.
It might be inconvenient, it might be confusing, but it will be a good experience.

The victims were pedestrians, so Tesla can't argue they knew/accepted Autopilot's risks.
People walking, biking, and inside other cars didn't consent to be Elon Musk's guinea pigs.
Bike helmets: Also good for zooming slightly carelessly up rocky areas, with less risk to the cranium!

It is very hard to steer a floppy fiberglass pole designed to be bendable on purpose
03.08.2025 05:33 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Theyβd need to be modified to allow the operators to actually maneuver them (currently theyβre just sprung and hydraulically tensioned with a βdumbβ three-position solenoid for switching tracks). But thatβs a solvable problem!

03.08.2025 02:10 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The dexterity required to align the poles is substantial, particularly in windy conditions. I suspect the challenge would be a bit more substantial. Nevertheless, Iβd like to see someone pull it off!
03.08.2025 00:47 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0...and why we haven't manufactured more of them.
We need transit manufacturing here!!
The wind may always be a hinderance, but there's certainly more we can do.
I watched dozens of attempts to get this clean shot, and only 2 successes. Every single failure I witness that day amounted to either "didn't drive far enough" or "drove too far".

The markings, currently, are just small strips of paint - but it doesn't have to be this way!
We could install high-visibility "<bus model> stop here" signs that would guide operators on exactly where to stop to achieve proper alignment.
This is an inexpensive solution that we should prioritize.
I've carefully observed hundreds of these alignments from all angles.
The common denominator across almost all them is poor alignment.
The trolleybus must be at a very precise location for it to work properly. Most aren't, and I don't believe this to be an issue of operator skill.
This saves transit operators time and makes their jobs safer, alleviating the need to don a high-vis vest and step out into traffic.
This technology has a reputation for being finicky and unreliable, but it doesn't have to be that way.
Why?
This is an auto-alignment point used by trolleybuses to switch from ESS (battery) to on-wire (OCS) operations.
The operator drives up to a predetermined alignment marking, hits a button, and both poles automatically extend to contact the wires.
The biggest lesson I've learned in 2025: Decentralization & DevOps reigns supreme.
From Ukrainian drone tactics to American domestic battles against authoritarianism, the more nimble defenders with the shortest feedback cycle times tend to win the day.
Comical as this example might be, I'm sharing it to encourage you to write a simple RFP (set of objective criteria) prior to any purchase of substance you might be considering!
"Substance" includes items you'll need to rely on in the course of a normal day of service :)
The RFP was for an SPF50+ rated, synthetic button down shirt, with vented back, and duel front pockets.
Consideration would be given to: Fabric texture, color, elasticity, durability, and quality of previous OEM bids.
I recently exercised options for another unit of this shirt, this time in green plaid.
REI won the bid on the original RFP because they were 40% cheaper than Kuhl and had a better texture. I've stuck with this model despite the tariff-flation because of that.

-Removing parking mandates
-Allowing corner stores everywhere
