My favorite talk at this year‘s @blackinneuro.bsky.social conference from Black in AI founder Dr. Timnit Gebru. We discussed the problematic history of AI research, and reimagined a future in which AI is decentralized, well-defined, and less biased. Lots to think/read about from this one!

Eugenics is on the rise again: human geneticists must take a stand Scientists must push back against the threat of rising white nationalism and the dangerous and pseudoscientific ideas of eugenics.

I wrote about how we must stand and fight against the threat of eugenics.

Fueled by white nationalism and scientific racism, these beliefs are factually wrong and ethically abhorrent.

This fight includes supporting efforts to diversify our workforce & science. To stop now would be a deep betrayal.

Grant awards are down *$3 billion* so far, compared to same time period last year

So next time you find yourself saying something like “I just want good hair” or “children with developmental disabilities should be terminated” or “poor people shouldn’t be having children” remember that is all rooted in eugenics! Ask yourself: why would we want there to be one true, ideal human?

Meanwhile, many argue against DEI saying it lowers standards…implying that ethnic minorities/disabled/low-income/women are inferior & unfit to run our society. It’s sad to hear but isn’t anything new. Eugenics is not dead, it’s the same mindset with an AI filter on it.

All the while, students in school aren’t taught that race has no inherent biological basis. In fact, education about race (CRT) is being actively suppressed by the new administration.

People still think the inequality we see in society is natural, rather than the result of racist & ableist policies. They see the differences in health/educatiom outcomes for lower income people & still think it’s because they’re inferior.

Over time, the eugenicists accepted they were wrong about genetics & that a lot of these issues are due to social factors.. but eugenics had already shaped decades of policy. Today we are seeing these same arguments repackaged.

They argued that Black & Jewish immigrants in particular were bringing in undesirable traits and immigration into US reduced by 97%. It also blocked Jewish people from escaping Nazi Germany to go to US!

Davenport and his colleagues learned this…but they looked at the data & ignored it. Meanwhile eugenics got stronger & more impactful. It was decided that Americans should let in less immigrants leading to the Immigration Act of 1924.

This was supported by the Supreme Court. They all wanted to create a new, better world- rid of the so called “feeble-minded” but their science was wrong. Genetics is more complicated than punnet squares & things like poverty are actually determined because of how our society is designed.

Eventually, these ideas caught hold & politicians began to listen! Teddy Roosevelt himself said that “I agree that society has no business permitting degenerates to continue their kind.” New laws limitted reproduction & 60k people were forcibly sterilized in US!

With funding from wealthy donors, Davenport started a new research institution: Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. His team at the Eugenics Record Office published studies “proving” that traits like morality, intelligence, & even success were passed down through genes just like height and eye color.

They conducted family history data & found many of the ppl in the institutions had family with criminal records, poverty, addiction issues etc. They (falsely) concluded that certain racial groups were genetically superior & these “traits” MUST be genetic & these ppl MUST be stopped from reproducing.

Davenport went on a mission to gather data, visiting instutitions for the “feebleminded”- ppl with physical & mental disabilites, & developed an intelligence test for them. This test ranked them into categories like moron, idiot, imbecile, bright, genius, etc. Yes these were actual scientific names!

Punnet squares were developed to explain the odds of offspring inheriting a trait from their parent. Scientists like Charles Davenport thought that traits like height & eye color could be inherited just as easily as intelligence, poverty, & crime. The goal: track these “bad traits” & eliminate them.
