We discussed the problematic history of AI research, and reimagined a future in which AI is decentralized, well-defined, and less biased. Lots to think/read about from this one!

The session features three speakers: Lindsay Ejoh (PhD Candidate, University of Pennsylvania), Anne Chisa (PhD Candidate, Root of Science Media), and Olivia Matshabane, Ph.D. (Department of Psychiatry, Stellenbosch University). Headshots of each speaker are shown alongside their names and institutions. The flyer notes it is a hybrid event with virtual registration available. Decorative borders and logos for Black In Neuro and #5YearsOfBIN are also included.

The professional development workshops at the @blackinneuro.bsky.social conference are def whipping us academics into shape! Weโve been encouraged to grow our personal brands, be consistent on LinkedIn, & brainstorm ways to incorporate innovation into our work to maximize our impact as scientists.

I wrote about how we must stand and fight against the threat of eugenics.
Fueled by white nationalism and scientific racism, these beliefs are factually wrong and ethically abhorrent.
This fight includes supporting efforts to diversify our workforce & science. To stop now would be a deep betrayal.
See this chart for one stark example: NIH funding has dramatically slowed down.
Grant awards are down *$3 billion* so far, compared to same time period last year
I asked the White House to explain.
โThis is not a researcher entitlement program,โ said an official, defending their new approach.
Menopause is a natural part of aging but often misunderstood.
This week co-editor @neuromelody.bsky.social pushes back the stigma to uncover what really happens in the brain during and after menopause.

Menopause is experienced by half the world's population and yet has been under-researched. This is an example of why equity and inclusion in research is important.
@neuromelody.bsky.social tells us what we know and still don't know about how menopause affects the brain.

14.02.2025 15:20 โ ๐ 7 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0So next time you find yourself saying something like โI just want good hairโ or โchildren with developmental disabilities should be terminatedโ or โpoor people shouldnโt be having childrenโ remember that is all rooted in eugenics! Ask yourself: why would we want there to be one true, ideal human?
14.02.2025 15:20 โ ๐ 7 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Meanwhile, many argue against DEI saying it lowers standardsโฆimplying that ethnic minorities/disabled/low-income/women are inferior & unfit to run our society. Itโs sad to hear but isnโt anything new. Eugenics is not dead, itโs the same mindset with an AI filter on it.
14.02.2025 15:20 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0All the while, students in school arenโt taught that race has no inherent biological basis. In fact, education about race (CRT) is being actively suppressed by the new administration.
14.02.2025 15:20 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0People still think the inequality we see in society is natural, rather than the result of racist & ableist policies. They see the differences in health/educatiom outcomes for lower income people & still think itโs because theyโre inferior.
14.02.2025 15:20 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Over time, the eugenicists accepted they were wrong about genetics & that a lot of these issues are due to social factors.. but eugenics had already shaped decades of policy. Today we are seeing these same arguments repackaged.
14.02.2025 15:20 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0They argued that Black & Jewish immigrants in particular were bringing in undesirable traits and immigration into US reduced by 97%. It also blocked Jewish people from escaping Nazi Germany to go to US!
14.02.2025 15:20 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Davenport and his colleagues learned thisโฆbut they looked at the data & ignored it. Meanwhile eugenics got stronger & more impactful. It was decided that Americans should let in less immigrants leading to the Immigration Act of 1924.
14.02.2025 15:20 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0This was supported by the Supreme Court. They all wanted to create a new, better world- rid of the so called โfeeble-mindedโ but their science was wrong. Genetics is more complicated than punnet squares & things like poverty are actually determined because of how our society is designed.
14.02.2025 15:20 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Eventually, these ideas caught hold & politicians began to listen! Teddy Roosevelt himself said that โI agree that society has no business permitting degenerates to continue their kind.โ New laws limitted reproduction & 60k people were forcibly sterilized in US!
14.02.2025 15:20 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0With funding from wealthy donors, Davenport started a new research institution: Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. His team at the Eugenics Record Office published studies โprovingโ that traits like morality, intelligence, & even success were passed down through genes just like height and eye color.
14.02.2025 15:20 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0They conducted family history data & found many of the ppl in the institutions had family with criminal records, poverty, addiction issues etc. They (falsely) concluded that certain racial groups were genetically superior & these โtraitsโ MUST be genetic & these ppl MUST be stopped from reproducing.
14.02.2025 15:20 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Davenport went on a mission to gather data, visiting instutitions for the โfeeblemindedโ- ppl with physical & mental disabilites, & developed an intelligence test for them. This test ranked them into categories like moron, idiot, imbecile, bright, genius, etc. Yes these were actual scientific names!
14.02.2025 15:20 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Punnet squares were developed to explain the odds of offspring inheriting a trait from their parent. Scientists like Charles Davenport thought that traits like height & eye color could be inherited just as easily as intelligence, poverty, & crime. The goal: track these โbad traitsโ & eliminate them.
