Formations that look like canon balls at Shore Acres State Park in Oregon. They are called concretions. They form around a nucleus of decaying organic material. They usually form before the rest of the sediment (the host rock) has hardened into solid rock. Fascinating!

Taken near Neah Bay, WA July 17, 2025. Neah Bay is the closest town to Cape Flattery, the northwestern-most point in the contiguous United States. The drive along the coast was gorgeous. You can see Vancouver Island across the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
