And is only going to keep getting better as both more renewables come online, and EV tech progresses. I saw EV Platforms review of the ID.Buzz this week and they were averaging under 20kWh/100km in city-ish driving. That puts that at 42.8gCO2/km, half a PHEV small city car for a 7 seater van!! ๐Ÿ˜‹

a result of 6420gCO2/100kms, or 64.2gCO2/km

A Toyota Yaris PHEV claims 91gCO2/km in its best case scenario. A van, almost double the number of seats and over double the boot space is nearly 30% lower. Hybrids have gotten better, but electrification, even done badly is just better!

Want to know the impact of Oct being a new low in fossil fuel generation?
My #bev 9 seater Citroen averages less than 30kWh/100km, but taking that for simplicity and over constraining the worst BEV efficiency on the roadsโ€ฆ
The average of 214gCOโ‚‚/kWh gives us,

Every far-right riot and protest that was tolerated, every racist dog whistle from public reps, every bit of hate and misinformation allowed to spread by social media companies, all led to this moment in Drogheda last night where someone felt emboldened enough to try to burn children alive.

I love this bit: โ€œCreanโ€™s win caused a massive shock by winningโ€ over the defending champ.

I see this lady daily, sometimes 2x a day running. This win has been nothing but sheer consistency and dedication. Nothing more.

Absolutely incredible performance and achievement, incredibly well deserved!

Others have noted that this doesnโ€™t have anything to say about who rioters were. But neither does it have a single word to say about the terrified people inside City West who were the intended targets of the mobโ€™s violence

For those wondering, this was the original post to show that the bridge is closed to vehicle traffic.

Also, Iโ€™ve no photos, but went to the Killaloe market on the far side of the river and picked up some gluten free bits and had a wander around the stalls!

Went to Ballina/Killaloe like I said I would. The old bridge is busy with people out walking, and a handful of cyclists. The new bridge is busy with walkers/runners/cyclists, mothers with kids on bicycles cycling the main road etc

Itโ€™s almost like build and they will comeโ€ฆ.

But yes, thereโ€™s a lot of people who do things that no one knows about, and the impact of some of them is huge! And itโ€™s like, ok cool, didnโ€™t know that ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Remember kids, science is cool, stay in school ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

Wouldnโ€™t mind but my knowledge isnโ€™t even to the depth of those involved in this sort of advancement day-to-day. Iโ€™m a Digital Physical Design engineer + Dig design a small bit, Iโ€™m doing the bit before manuf steps in, so Iโ€™ve lost a bit of knowledge from not using it either myself!

19.10.2025 06:58 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

The article you have there talks about the cutting and edge effects, feature size being reduced can help there, as itโ€™s less susceptible to the impact of cutting (where it appears itโ€™s sort of cut off the flat plane of devices vs a nice known edge, which seems strange, but ok??)

18.10.2025 22:08 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

And to the thicker bars vs the thinner features we see now; thatโ€™s from smaller more advanced technology nodes. So old wafers were probably on 180nm or larger processes, they work well. Even step to 90nm, and now you can control things with higher speed and accuracy.

18.10.2025 22:01 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

But thinner wafers also increase performance vs temp stresses, so solar PV gets hot and we see the negative coefficient of their performance as temp increases. Thinner wafers help control thermal stress & performance (plus some smart approaches in manuf doping levels) to stop this.

18.10.2025 22:01 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I.e a solid thud of your VW/Audi door vs the tinny one in an old Nissan Primera ๐Ÿคฃ

18.10.2025 22:01 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Thinner wafers then improve performance and efficiency, and means slightly lighter doping might be required to control ground planes, but really itโ€™s about the fact that thinner wafers + manuf controls like wafer grinding can improve device feature quality,

18.10.2025 22:01 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

It would be hard to quantify a figure, but itโ€™s beyond just costs!
Thinner wafers increases yield from the silicon ingot, so more wafers per ingot is the first thing. The 80% quoted there is literally pure profit, or pure cost savings, the later in this case.

18.10.2025 22:01 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Iโ€™m 15 yrs working in the Semicon industry, did my BSc in IC engineering, so this is a very very cool statistic, the amount of effort to reduce silicon wafer thickness like this is very impressive and quite hard to explain with being really nerdy about it ๐Ÿคฃ

In v v simple terms, itโ€™s cheaper now!

All in to say, Iโ€™m going to bed with a bit of a grin on my face, as this is huge! We are really starting to make significant progress this year for #EVcharging and it is not slowing down at all!

And with ZEVI phase 3 announced this week, chargers are going into local areas and not just major routes

Also Iโ€™m working on a presentation for #GEVA and I did a video of the Infrastructure updates on the @ievasso.bsky.social site. Itโ€™s a 50 sec video to scroll through whatโ€™s there, and itโ€™s sort of hard to capture sites/names/no of connectors in the video.

Thereโ€™s a huge increase yet to come as well!

40 additional CCS/CHAdeMo connectors have gone live in Ireland in the last month, but @thommcg.bsky.social has done the sums and itโ€™s predicted that we will hit 30+% *NEW* CCS connectors by the end of this year! Phenomenal growth and a clear indication that #EVsky is the way forward!

Nothing too drastic for BEV in Budget 2026, good to see extensions to existing parts that help keep electrification affordable, and to keep existing grants and reliefs around for longer to keep the EV transition going!

Exactly! Very hit and miss with it. Only good side I can see with public expenditure here is that it is putting a focus on infrastructure vs individual vehicles of any type, so there is a reasonable approach being taken, just slow!

We have a similar issue here with electric vehicle grants for taxis here. They open and are closed very quickly, no surprises given itโ€™s a โ‚ฌ20k grant for scrapping an old vehicle and buying a new BEV!

02.10.2025 10:13 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Definitely needs intervention, but we were stifled here by the cost of the Smart Fortwo models, it made no financial sense! My hope is that the new small electric models are now cheaper vs any other fuel source so we should see a shift towards them I hope!

My own solar PV went in May 2023. In the first 7 months it saved me โ‚ฌ900, and pricing had changed year on year for purchased elec, but Iโ€™m still saving around โ‚ฌ1k a year minimum, 2024 had a savings of โ‚ฌ1,160!
