The Rugged Island: A Shetland Lyric (HippFest Opening Night) Pioneering Glasgow-born filmmaker Jenny Gilbertson directs this poignant “story documentary” about crofting families in Shetland.

Jenny’s husband-to-be plays Johnny: a young man torn between his duty to home and his love for Enga, with the promise of a new life in Australia. Hailed by John Grierson - father of the British documentary movement - as “one of the best descriptions of life in the country anybody has yet made”, this tender and beautiful dramatisation of Shetland life surpasses the bounds of both fiction and non-fiction filmmaking.

HippFest is proud to present the world premiere of a new music commission by award-winning multi-instrumentalist and composer from Fair Isle: Inge Thomson, with Shetland-born Catriona MacDonald - considered one of the world's leading traditional fiddle players.

Imagine how different our world would be if people defined their legacy as planting seeds they will never see the growth from. If everyone tried to plant the best seeds they possibly could w/o worrying abt receiving material wealth immediately, the world would be so much more healthy in all respects

I'll let you tell us if you consider the legal reasoning to be sound, but I thought the idea of discussing the character of Zorro in a legal Order, including mentioning Fairbanks' 1920 portrayal of Zorro, to be an unexpected tribute!

It's been crazy busy but I'm now ready to enjoy a quiet Christmas with Pollie (a 3 month old Labrador-cross puppy I adopted) and my two twin cats, Robert & Douglas, named for my father & uncle, since the two brother kitties are as inseparable as my Uncle Douglas was from my Dad, Robert Fairbanks. 🎄🤶

You’ve never read The Outsiders? I think I found it when I (speaking as Kelley, Letitia’s niece) found it in ~1972-23 when it was first published. I was in JHS and rapt with attention at the riveting and true stories of what it was like to be ‘out’ of the ‘in’ crowd in any HS.
