3. During my postdoc, I’ll be completing an ethnography of the development process of two Indigenous-led operas, and working on my book “Positioning Contemporary Opera in Canada: Identities, Indigeneities, and Intersectionalities.” I’m so excited!

1. I’m now in the final 6 months of my PhD at UofT(oronto) and am adjuncting at the University of Western Ontario.
2. I’ll also be starting a 2-year postdoc at Western this coming June!

I was just forwarded communications from Duke admins that this is true: one of the largest and most active herbaria in the United States is being closed in the middle of an extinction crisis, because Duke leadership does not wish to support the infrastructure costs.

I want to write a dissertation on all the current Elmo and mental health discourse. It sounds like more fun than my dissertation…though to be fair, most things do these days!

My brain: can’t figure out the final 150 words of the program notes I’ve been trying to write for two days.

Also my brain: instead thinks up solutions for 3 other forthcoming projects that are not due for monte/a year.

*Cries in the key of I’ve basically spent the last five years paying my employer to let me work for them.*

Also “will continue writing and reading through polar vortex while very cold, gasping for air, and grasping for more Tylenol” feels like it should go on my CV somewhere…

There’s a polar vortex, my heating is broken, I’m fighting asthma attacks and migraines, and I need to finish editing and formatting a book chapter that I’m late on and feeling very guilty about. And after that read 200 pages of ethnography by 11 tomorrow.

I don't have the words yet for Jon Batiste's American Symphony documentary, beyond "life-changing," "what it means to be human and alive" and "what music can give us." At some point I'll stop crying and form those thoughts into actual sentences, but for now: watch it, please. :)

Thank you to everyone who came to the CRIE panel this morning! It was an honour and a joy to share stories and truths with you all, and to learn so much from my fellow panelists and members of the audience.

I'm also giving a paper in the Sunday panel on "Opera and the Politics of Inclusion and Consent," focusing on emerging practices of Indigenous sovereignty in Indigenous-led opera in Canada. Naomi André and Rebecca Carroll are giving papers as well, and I'm so excited to learn from them. Please come!

I'm involved in two AMS events this year:

- The AMS Critical Race Lecture, "The Shape of Musicology to Come," on Friday from 10:45-12:15. Alex, Amanda, Diane, Ireri, Jessica, Lisa, Sergio, and I have worked really hard to create a meaningful panel discussion to share with you all. Please join us!

As I pack to depart for AMS tomorrow, I'm reminded of one of my favourite unscholarly memories: an influential senior woman scholar (who shall not be named) met me, looked at my outfit, turned to her friend, and said "don't you just love how the young people have FINALLY brought fashion to the AMS?"
