Yeah for me it just hasn't hit, different strokes and all that. The grief I've felt in my life just doesn't connect well with this game's priorities but I'm sure it connects with plenty of people or the game wouldn't have been so beloved.

And this just doesn't suit me for a game so specifically about trauma and grief because to only touch on theatrics, on the big whirlwind of regrets, is you miss the reconstructing your life, the feeling of what's missing but having to press on. Saying "We Continue" doesn't encapsulate it.

I want to see what is being written in quiet moments in the Expedition journal but we don't get that. The relationship levels are my preferred part of the game in that they're the closest thing to it.

The non-theatrical emotion thing is more a critique of the way I've felt about the writing as a whole to this point, the game demurs any time it has to show quiet emotion, almost always leaving it to implication and pulling the figurative or literal camera away.

Reached Act 3... I could imagine some compelling things coming from this twist if the writers were more interested in non-theatrical emotion, as it feels muddy and like it really is meant to be read in broad strokes. Guess I'll see how they bring it home.

The best thing I can say for it is that Sakurai used it for interesting constrained design, I think Kirby Air Ride is an interesting attempt to make A the only thing you need to press, but that's inspiration at most, not necessity.
