S²OUTH - Student Sub Orbital Unified Telemetry Handler We do this not because it is easy, but because we thought it would be easy. This is the unofficial motto of WüSpace, a student organization in Würzburg. Our current main project, S²OUTH, is the perfect explanation why we choose this slogan as our motto. In this project we are developing a modern and reliable telemetry system for rockets. The goal of the system is to provide live telemetry including sensor data, and high precision pose estimation for the entire duration of a suborbital space...

Team @wuespace.bsky.social has been developing a telemetry system for rockets! They are cooperating with other student teams on this as well. Do you want to learn more about the specifics of their project? Read all about it in our community post:

Meet Healy, our THRIVE mascot! 🦎 THRIVE just aced its final bench test in Oberpfaffenhofen. Our autonomous cooling system (-12°C) is validated and the experiment is officially flight-ready. THRIVE has been handed over—next stop: Sweden for our March launch campaign! 🇸🇪🚀

We believe in sharing knowledge, which is why many of our projects are Open Source. By publishing our work, we can contribute our research progress to other student teams and the wider scientific community.

The majority of our members have switched from Windows to Linux. Not only is the development experience for our hardware projects much smoother, but it also allows us to avoid proprietary software almost entirely.

Most of our web services are now self-hosted. For example, our team photos live in a self-hosted Immich instance. Thanks to our dedicated sysadmins, everything is running flawlessly! We even created some custom services like a tool to view our legal documents like the constitution of our club.

We moved away from Twitter, since the platform was directed towards disinformation and hate speech. Although we have less followers on Mastodon and Bluesky, we’ve found the communities to be much more welcoming and authentic.

Over the past week, THRIVE had the opportunity to integrate and test our experiment module on REXUS 36 at ZARM in Bremen. For the first time, all subsystems and components came together on the rocket, and got verified as a complete system.

We passed the shaker test and are almost ready for launch!🚀

Come visit us at Hack&Make at the #consumenta in Nürnberg. We are still here today and tomorrow, from 10:00 to 18:00. You can also check out many FabLabs and other makers from the area.

Thank you #fablabnuernberg for inviting us!

Thanks to the satellite SONATE-2 that is being operated by students at @jmuspace.bsky.social, we were able take these amazing pictures of Campo Militar de Santa Margarida, where the European Rocketry Challenge (EUROC) took place!

We have been invited by #ASTG to fly a payload on their hybrid #ispida rocket at #euroc this year. Thanks for having us!
As the launch date is approaching, members of our project #s2outh have arrived in Portugal, and are preparing our video and telemetry system - "the cube" - for integration.

This week we visited #dlrk, a german aerospace congress. Alongside our friends at #warr, #auxspace, #erig, #sprog, and #ksat, we got to connect with actors in the german aerospace sector, and showed how students can participate in the field.
Huge thanks to #dglr for inviting us!

Have you seen Sunday’s lunar eclipse?
Our telescope captured this shot of the Moon cloaked in deep red.
As the photo was taken just shortly sunset, the air was still shimmering with heat, creating subtle distortions you can spot if you look closely.

Besides showing metalheads what student aerospace is all about, we got to meet ESA astronaut Alexander Gerst!

A huge thanks to @wackenopenair.bsky.social and DGLR (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Luft- und Raumfahrt) for having us. You rock! 🫶

🏳️‍🌈 Life hack: Dupont wires make for great DIY rainbow bracelets!

This year has shown us to what lengths people will go to show their hatred of LGBTQIA+ people. We stand with our queer siblings and count ourselves lucky to have so many in our club living their lives authentically!

Happy Pride!
