Vertical view looking up at the ngVLA prototype antenna, dish securely in place on its pedestal. The prototype telescope is white and backlit against a bright, clear blue sky. A person is visible in the center of the telescope, showing its scale.

A large crane getting ready to lift a big, geometric metal structure - the ngVLA prototype antenna dish. The sky behind the crane and dish is brilliant blue with faint wispy clouds.

Some pictures from last week when the ngVLA prototype antenna dish was lifted (by 2 GIANT cranes) onto its pedestal!

Majestic! The very first of 250+ telescopes of the next-generation Very Large Array (ngVLA) had its "dish lift" in New Mexico today. Recording here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5cK...

Strong opinions aside: I think it's generally healthy to remember how and why we are naming things. The LMC/SMC discussion was definitely insightful (and not quite as harsh and bitter as some other ongoing debates, so far...).
