New report from our #UBS Hub: βThe Future of Tourism: Holidays as Public Luxuryβ ποΈ
Tourism today is extractive, unequal, and unsustainable. We imagine what it could be instead: a public good, democratically owned and ecologically viableπ
A lot of the food we eat in the UK is imported from overseas and so as a country we're particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change on food production. This is a vital new report from @autonomy-institute.bsky.social!

Major hikes in food prices are baked in. What should we do about it?
Quick explainer:
UK food prices could rise by 34% due to climate change.

28.07.2025 05:22 β π 7 π 4 π¬ 1 π 0Under the ever worsening conditions of climate change we can no longer afford the needs of private capital dominating our food systems and we can no longer afford the oligarchs it creates undermining democracy.

Our food system isnβt ready for the climate crisis, but new bold policy could help build resilience, protect the vulnerable, and guarantee the right to food for all π

We need to build resilience in the UKβs food system through #UBS and beyond:
- A free βbasket of essentialsβ for all
- Public diners in every town
- Price controls on basic goods
- Long-term contracts with regenerative farms
- Basic income for food producers
Lower-income households are hit hardest since:
- They spend more of their income on food
- They canβt easily absorb price shocks
- Children and working-age adults are most vulnerable
Why? The UK imports nearly 50% of its food, much of it from climate-exposed countries. Heatwaves, floods and droughts abroad translates to higher prices here.
28.07.2025 06:45 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Our new modelling shows that by 2050:
- Climate-driven heatwaves could raise UK food prices by 34% π‘οΈ
- The average household could lose Β£1,200/year π
- Up to 951,000 more people could be pushed into poverty π
Food prices in the UK are rising β but not only because of global conflict, Brexit, or supply chains π
The climate crisis is already driving inflation: this is 'climateflation'.

The EPA offers a real-world model for Universal Basic Services: public service delivery that is democratic, affordable, and locally driven.
Food today. Housing, care, and more tomorrow?...
The operational model is based on:
- Cooperative-led governance
- Municipal support without control
- Guaranteed purchase contracts for small producers
- Dual distribution: institutions + consumer food boxes
π¦ Within 1 hour of launch, 1,000 food boxes sold
πΎ Producers are now planting crops specifically to meet EPA demand
π Eliminates intermediary markups via direct producer-to-consumer distribution
The EPA is a βpublic but not stateβ food enterprise launched in Rosario in 2024.
It delivers 15 essential foods at up to 40% below market prices, with no ongoing state subsidies.
