Finally have gotten around to processing #astrophotography data I took a week ago: this is 8 hours of imaging of the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant that I took over 3 nights. Details on ALT text #astronomy #ThePhotoHour #speirgorm

From trunk to tail, every inch of Amali is coated in Nature's own sunscreen and insect repellent: mineral-rich mud. Umani's unique volcanic springs produce this distinctively dark grey mud. The orphans take advantage of the protection it offers in this heat, wallowing to their hearts content.

Participated in an interview for CBC's coverage of the spectacular event GW231123

This event is extreme for LIGO due to its high mass and high likelihood of exhibiting relativistic spin precession, and many other goodies!!!

This plot shows gravitational-wave signals recorded by the LIGO Hanford detector almost ten years apart. The top shows data from LIGO's first-ever detection of gravitational waves, an event called GW150914, captured in 2015. The bottom shows the signal known as GW250114, captured in 2025. Both events involve colliding black holes about 1.3 billion light-years away with masses between 30 to 40 times that of our Sun. The purple line shows the data, which are a combination of the signal plus background detector noise. The noise comes from a variety of sources, including seismic motions that jiggle giant mirrors inside LIGO. The green line shows the best-fit prediction from general relativity for each signal. The much lower noise seen today is thanks to cutting-edge improvements made to the LIGO detectors that hush unwanted noise.

This chart plots discoveries made by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) network since LIGO's first detection, in 2015, of gravitational waves emanating from a pair of colliding black holes. The detections consist mainly of black hole mergers, but a handful involve neutron stars (either black hole-neutron star collisions or neutron star-neutron star collisions).

How's the weather up there? โ˜€๏ธ๐ŸŒค๏ธ

Pretty mild, actually!

That's what makes Cerro Pachรณn in Chile a great spot for NSFโ€“DOE Rubin Observatory. It has stable temperatures, dry air, and few rainy days, which means more time for observing the cosmos! ๐Ÿ”ญ๐Ÿงช

New masses in the stellar graveyard plot, showing astronomical observations of black holes and neutron stars. The number of gravitational-wave observations of black holes is overwhelming. The plot is arranged to look nice, the horizontal axis has no meaning, but the vertical one shows masses. We have a significant range of masses from about 1 solar mass to over 200 solar masses for our largest merger remnant. New out today is a neutron star black hole binary GW230518_125908, as well as a lot of binary black holes.

If you track the history since the 90s, it's actually really clear what happened. Corporate labs (Bell Labs, IBM, etc) closed up shop or dramatically scaled back because the labs weren't profitable. The scientists who worked there went to universities, where research is much cheaper. 1/3 โš›๏ธ๐Ÿงช
