As a gay white woman, when I think about the fact that Bari Weiss is a gay, white, Jewish woman who promotes white straight anti-LGBTQ+ misogynists, white nationalists and sexual predators, it’s clear that due to her unearned platform we’re all being forced to deal with her self hate and insecurity

You know he’s that guy who removes his shoes and airs out his smelly feet on the plane too but in this case I almost can’t blame him 😬😬😬

Love this! It’s similar to research showing the wide range of physical, mental, emotional health benefits when ppl have access to trees/green space! This is what my terminated NSF CAREER climate justice action research project is all about, and why I’ll always fight to move this work forward!πŸŒ²πŸŒŽπŸ’š

You should take my course! We talk reparations specific to climate justice and what that might look like too. I will say, when students learn the truth in high school, college they get FIRED UP and are ready to use that knowledge to take action, create a just world. It gives me so much HOPE!

Right?! Like that’s the coolest part of this powerful series, or one of them! How do we build our work up outside the academy? I’m reimagining public access to my courses and how community-driven climate justice is the way forward! πŸ™ŒπŸΌπŸ«ΆπŸΌ

Oh we’re not leaving, you have us forever, right?! Seriously, thank you, for everything!! You turned the fuel of professional devastation into absolute FIRE! Nothing worth doing is ever easy and you are leading with such courage and fierce integrity! Keep going, we’re all rooting for you, always πŸ’ͺ🏼🫢🏼

I’m serious too, you’ve got me thinking about how to communicate and respect and push thinking in bar talk style, like it could actually be a series, stories move people to action, and you gotta reach hearts and minds to make a real difference

Bari Weiss aims to gerrymander lines of public debate with new and β€œcharismatic” voices like……..Alan Dershowitz?? πŸ€‘πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«

I teach a university course, obviously not geared toward the pub. But it’s important to think of what climate justice bar talk could look like! I lean into stories first (before science) focusing on urban/extreme heat - how does it impact farmers, prisoners, elderly ppl, construction workers….

And if it wasn’t erased it’s whitewashed! I teach a climate justice course that starts with a basic question: who lives where and why? You cant understand environmental/climate injustice today w/o knowing how federal laws forcibly removed Native ppl, Black Americans were banned from owning houses

Climate denial is about protecting big oil for the most part, and my climate justice course is an elective course, students take it by choice. I don’t shy away from historical facts in service of conspiracy theories, if there’s no one to lead don’t we all become followers?

The methods course is so inspiring because it shapes how teachers attend to young people’s diverse ways of knowing, forms of brilliance - and in turn shapes students’ futures too - who is seen and supported as a science type person etc. I wrote this commentary in case it’s of interest

Resistance Study Series

@karenattiah.bsky.social created/ taught this amazing series when Columbia refused to let her teach her race/media course last spring. It’s inspired me to think about how to make higher ed accessible/reimagine this whole space. Check out her Resistance Study Series movement - it’s DOPE! More soon…

Oh I see. Yes. All of it matters! I also teach the secondary science methods course in our single subject credential program (future middle /high school science teachers take it). I designed it to center equity and justice in novel ways. Our session tomorrow is: language, power, science

I had to miss the last class due to a grant deadline (to support my stolen NSF work)😭. What an honor to take this 101/02 series! Bluesky to big time! You’ve taken so many hits & are a role model, inspiring me to stay true, stand up, fight! We’re just getting started building the world we deserve!🫢🏼πŸ’ͺ🏼

There is hope I think though! As we celebrate Thanksgiving I remember the pure fiction story I learned and was like if my elementary school-aged twins come home with pilgrim art etc! But their school (and many) rocks, practiced gratitude and went on a field trip to learn about the Ohlone ppl/lands

I see how challenging it must be on your end too! Especially with a service dog, your dog isn’t everyone’s pet!

Agree, I respect dogs on leash but I get so angry with SO MANY dog owners whose off leash dogs would charge at my twins (they seem to love toddlers) or me recently after abdominal surgery while the owner pays no care and yells don’t worry THEY’RE FRIENDLY….like, I don’t have to love your dog

Yes and DOGE destroyed American science and the federal workforce. This is an insane take from someone in his position and also exactly I think why Dems have a serious problem. Like literally go to talk 1 federal worker right now, just 1!!!! 😀

I grew up in Green Bay WI and we visited my grandparents in the UP often (where my parents grew up). Very cool to see a NYT story about this area. Sending to my fam! 🫢🏼

As someone who had their dream NSF CAREER grant stolen, reading this rubs. DOGE took our grants, jobs, life’s work, dignity! Govt waste was never a goal, simply a cover. It was wildly successful at its real mission to ruin American science, degrade the entire federal workforce (see Russel Vought)
