We should not have to buy our heritage back from treasure hunters. And our museums should not be in stark, market-driven financial competition with auction houses for our shared past. 🏺

They're calling it the Representation of the People Bill, while keeping a voting system that fails to represent the people. Add your name to demand they make it do what it says on the tin

This really shows how unrepresentative of public opinion our elections have become.

It's not just that seats in Parliament have little to do with how people voted.

It's also that people feel like they can't vote how they want in the first place.

We need PR more than ever.

Metal detecting is not covered by any of that system, however. No permission is needed (other than from a landowner) to detect. Unless a site is protected ('scheduled') by law, in which case detecting is a crime. There's around 20,000 such sites across England.

The system usually works well, though does tend to lead to chronic underfunding for things like training and professional development for archaeologists, or long term careers.
