Did this poster many years ago based on a "WW2 Dinosaurs" suggestion (I think) @davidhahn.bsky.social wrote on a whiteboard in @helioscopepdx.bsky.social for our daily sketch exercise. Turned out to be one of the most resonant things I ever made and it started as a loose gag. I still think it's fun.

Little panel I liked

Helioscope artist Colleen Coover is at a small drafting table, drawing with brush and ink. She’s wearing a cap she knitted herself and has her favorite coffee mug nearby.

The finished drawing, executed in ink and wash. Howard, an anthropomorphic duck with a loud tie and a cigar in his mouth, fights off Garko the Man-Frog. If you try to picture Garko based on that name, I bet you’ll come pretty close. Howard was created by Steve Gerber and Val Mayerik. Garko was by Gerber and (I think?) Frank Brunner. I’d check, but bsky sometimes crashes if I switch apps in the middle of writing alt text. One of you will check for me though, I bet.

We’ve had the pleasure of watching @jcscottart.bsky.social develop this project, and she’s knocking it out of the park!

My baby-son really likes the little blue truck series of books. I’m grateful for that because they are always a good time for me too. The best kids books, from a parental perspective, are the sort you don’t mind reading a thousand times over. All of these stories have depth and heart.

The title character is considerate and kind from his first appearance. Even when others are rude, little blue makes an effort to show them that there’s a better way. Blue’s world is populated with a great supporting cast of animals that he includes, befriends and cares for. I love doing voices for each of them.

The attention to detail in the words and images are what makes each story work revisiting. A simple counting story or texture book still integrates lessons about diversity and consent. The series’s first artist passed in 2017 but her name still shares equal billing with the author. One could see that as a lesson about loyalty hiding in plain sight.

All of this stuff may seem obvious but it’s rare to find all of it done with consistent subtlety, brevity and beauty. I find new layers to love each time through. These days, neighbors are scared to trust, decency is a foreign currency and kindness is framed as weak. It’s heartening that Little Blue Truck offers a wholesome alternative.

I made a little comic celebrating something nice in the world that my family loves. It can also serve as a recommendation for those of you who are (or are considering becoming) parents. Finding joy where you can is a survival skill in bizarre and awful times. I ‘ll fix the typos (I just noticed!)
