#FindsFriday This unique carving of a woman was discovered in 1880 in a peat bog in Ballachulish near Loch Leven, #Scotland in 1880. Carved from a single piece of alder, the Ballachulish women stands 1.5m tall, has quartz pebbles for eyes and dates to about 600AD. Her purpose is unknown. #IronAge

Beneath a stormy looking sky the sandy beach glows in a patch of sunlight. The sand leads down to the choppy, turquoise and dark green waters of Loch Dunvegan (a sea loch). The dazzling white ‘sand’ of Claigan Coral Beach, that can be seen in many photos, is in fact not sand. It’s also not coral. It’s formed by the deposit of small pieces of ‘coralline’ hard seaweed called maerl that is crushed by wave action, dried and sun bleached on the shore. This is an important habitat the Maerl beds are purply-pink when alive. They are a marine nature conservation priority in Scottish waters as they are an important habitat for small marine plants and animals including young scallops.
