if you genuinely think Schumer and Democratic leadership opposed this & Republicans coincidentally got exactly the number of votes they needed to avoid a filibuster and none of those votes are from Democratic Senators who are up for reelection in the midterms next year, I have a bridge to sell you.

I feel more like this with every passing year.

We need a party that is committed to preserving, protecting & improving life. We don’t need people intent on endlessly negotiating how much humanity we deserve or if we deserve any at all.

We don’t need a society built around manufactured scarcity.

I never stick to this anyway πŸ˜† , but fortunately most friends and family members also read, so my local book stores still get a lot of business for gift occasions.

This! My kids, new voters, have been taught to do this in any race where a candidate is in both rows.

Mamdani shows how hungry voters are for candidates who act like they actually care for the places they'd represent. Will he deliver? Not on everything. But he has an exuberance for the city that you wish Congress had for the country.

the party now cared more about climate change and various academic fixations than cheap energy and good-paying jobs.

the party now cared more about climate change and various academic fixations than cheap energy and good-paying jobs.

This right here, this exact sentence, is THE problem in American political journalism.

The IRA *was* cheap energy and good jobs! That was the whole bill! Democrats did precisely what political pundits are telling them to do and the pundits just ignore it.

"People are getting free food and they might not deserve it!" who gives a shit man literally one of the unambiguously good things about the 21st century is we have lots of excess food production and we have the capacity to have hunger be significantly less important in decision making.

The poor don’t use cash transfers on alcohol and tobacco. Really. Two years ago, Anna Popova and I put out a working paper examining whether beneficiaries of cash transfer programs are more likely than others to spend money on alcohol and cigarettes (β€œtempt…

A common concern about universal basic income is that people will end up buying drugs with it but in study after study, abuse of drugs tends to go down when people are provided cash. Why? Because a big reason people abuse drugs is self-medication of life stressors.

This speech made me realize just how undignified the whole thing has gotten.

This is going to be a historic speech, the kind of speech that doesn’t happen anymore because everyone is crude and cynical, and sank to Trump’s level. We don’t need trolls, we deserve leadership.

It looks like this.

In social movement studies, we talk about how marches and protests expand the threshold of acceptable risk so that people take more and bigger social risks IN PUBLIC, EN MASSE. This is extremely important for the bourgeois white folks holding signs and building social rapport.

Also, they want to make content. And that means they are going to take the worst stuff people say in response to them (this being the internet, some of which might be quite bad) and splash it across the official comms organs of every major federal law enforcement agency. So take that into mind.

the actual story here, which the media never talks about, is that police in this country have become a discrete right-wing political operation. the story isn't about cops leaving (they're lying about that), it's about the police trying to exert influence over elections.

I read my mom's Parents magazine. My baby brother came along when I was 9 years old, I knew exactly what to do. I read my grandparents Reader's Digests and TV Guide when I visited. And that was not long before I started borrowing Mom's and Grandma's romance novels.

The reason why AI loves emdashes is that they stole from every writer ever to create its database.

And we love us some gotdamn emdashes.

It's also why it doesn't know where to actually put a comma.

It is the job of the Democratic party to sell and defend the policies that most Democratic voters want, not to present a candidate slate that is palatable to moderate Republicans who might switch if they hate their own candidate enough.

It was the late 1980s and the American plan to combat hepatitis B wasn’t working. A vaccine had been available since 1982 and recommended for those deemed to be at highest risk, such as health care workers and men who have sex with men. But the infection rates had gone up, not down. When epidemiologists at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention dug into the data, they noticed one figure that had stayed alarmingly stable: Between 30% and 40% of hepatitis B patients had no identifiable risk factors at all.

When they published their paper in 1990, it was subtitled, β€œNeed for Alternative Vaccination Strategies.” The next year, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices β€” the CDC body that sets such guidelines β€” recommended vaccinating all infants. Over the next two decades, case numbers plummeted by 99% among children and teens.

Hey, turns out we recommend the Hep B birth dose for a reason.
