I consider this to be a must-watch for everyone, everywhere. @kevinclimate.bsky.social doesn't sugar-coat the situation we're in, he tells it straight.
We need to understand the deep trouble we're in.

Deregulation is not an industrial strategy.

Our message to the informal European Council meeting this week is that under heavy pressure, Europe’s industry needs direction, not deregulation.

Industrial policy driven by deregulation has failed before - let's not repeat the mistake.

4/ Danish friends have pointed out that halibut is now also protected in the Danish zone of Skagerrak these winter months. The question is then: how is this enforced? And can we trust these bottomtrawlers will not target redlisted or protected species when they have been caught red-handed before?

Here's the ratio:
7.3 trillion / 220 billion = 33

That means for every $1 invested in protecting nature, about $33 x more is spent on activities that degrade it.

Tourism is the most obvious form of unsustainable growth. It runs almost fully on oil, as other transport purposes do.

There is little electrification across the entire sector.

Economic growth is still heating the planet. Is there any way out? Rising GDP continues to mean more carbon emissions and wider damage to the planet. Can the two be decoupled?

“Economic growth has a near mythical status in the affections of economists and politicians.”

The oddity in Finland is that we barely have any growth, and now it is pursued in the most harmful ways.

‘Top 1%’ of emitters caused almost a quarter of growth in global emissions since 1990 - Carbon Brief Just 1% of the world’s population was responsible for almost a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions over 1990-2019, new research finds.

“I find that, in 2019, the bottom 50% of the world population emitted 12% of global emissions, whereas the top 10% emitted 48% of the total.”

It is not enough to question the GDP obsession; we also need to discuss how pollution and wealth are connected.

The current market-based paradigm delivers results in power generation, but does not reduce emissions fast enough in other sectors. Transport is the largest emissions source in the EU.

Sufficiency isn't anti-growth, but requires some consumption to be recomposed. Fairness matters in that.
