I always found cyberpunk offered a small but hopeful vision of resistance and possibility, which seems to be completely buried by modern tech

Chris Cuomo - Wikipedia

For sure laugh at Chris Cuomo for his gullibility in falling for a fake AOC video, but also remember that he got fired from CNN for using his news contacts to discover and discredit Andrew Cuomo's victims of sexual assault/harassment

Difficult but necessary read.

From the article, an observation that comes up repeatedly in harassment, abuse, and discrimination complaints:

β€œAll the allegations point to a huge power imbalance...part of what she says as a β€œmuch bigger cycle of abuse of power” at the Philharmonic

I have never heard a thing about this, and now I have so many questions for so many people.

I liked The Return of Ellie Black. Starts a little slow, but really picks up and delivers a punch

I'm also a big fan of Jane Harper. I'd start with The Dry. It's part of a series, and you can watch a very good movie version on Netflix afterwards

It's really weird to demand accountability from a NYC mayoral candidate for a deadly NYC shooting rather than the current NYC mayor, an ex-cop who campaigned on a "tough on crime" platform and promptly got indicted for crimes

Two points:

Republicans are counting on Democrats being concerned about the "moral high ground" and not acting to counter them

Why is serial loser Beto O'Rourke still taking up space in the political sphere of Texas? He has been rejected again and again. He just wants attention

Violence deconstructed: Hysteria over Zohran Mamdani’s crime platform rooted in lie that cops make women safer Mamdani’s critics have launched a smear campaign that ignores that police pose an existential threat to victimsβ€”and all of us

The right has long attacked Mamdani over his thoughtful positions on crime but recently these attacks have intensified, manipulatively invoking domestic violence victims. The backlash is rooted in the lie that cops make women safer, @kylietcheung.bsky.social reports.

Epstein hiring Giuffre away from Mar-a-Lago was the cause of the breakup of the Trump-Epstein friendship. Epstein took something that was Trump's. DT doesn't care about the child trafficking. It's all about possessions.

The former band kid current college teacher was way alarmed about this setup. It was a wild ride, and I can't formulate a review yet, but I'll try soon.

Finally got around to a) reading, and more importantly b) finishing Kelly Link's The Book of Love. It was on the NYT best 100 books of 2024 list, but I know I shared on here the concerns of a magical band director that brought back three of his former students from the dead to perform magic tasks

I saw a prime ex of this at the last NASM meeting, where a school was promoting its new pop music program: Jazz and Pop. First, that is a complete, old-white-person understanding of style relationships, and second, the audition repertoire for pop was all from the 1960s/70s.

I love that schools are becoming more stylistically open - my biggest observation now is that genre/stylistic purity is antithetical to current students (among other issues). But I do worry that most schools don't have the expertise to teach multiple styles, especially pop. We're amateurs.

At Montana State new students would come for orientation. On the last morning, as they were registering for classes and away from their parents, they would come to the school of music and tell us that they really wanted to be music majors and ask us what they could do

Yes, food is a % increase, which hurts. But watching your trans students get hospitalized bc the gov’t wants to erase their existence. Worrying that your family members of color might get disappeared by a racist government. Watching women and POC be fired from jobs. You can worry about more

I absolutely do have to. You know nothing about me.

I’m watching my trans students have to be hospitalized bc of self harm. I worry about my friends and family members getting snatched by a secret police force. I worry that my LGBTQ+ colleagues being physically harmed.

Jay Leno is a good example of someone whose opinions I think just do not need to be news. He has gone off to live with his money, and every now and then he says something uninteresting that sounds exactly like what you would say if nothing you saw happening in the world mattered to you.

People who think the United States isn't depraved enough to rehabilitate sexual predator Ghislaine Maxell forget how quickly the United States rehabilitated sexual predator Donald Trump. We are not a moral country; we are a country of shameless opportunism.

It is fucking insane that we had a decade of people complaining about the dangers of cancel culture, and now literally hundreds of thousands of people are being purged from government jobs for ideological reasons, but that is not cancel culture.

I think Rahm dislikes anyone who isn’t him, or who disagrees with him. As mayor he pretty clearly hated Black people and teachers. And as an aide to Obama he pretty much hated liberals

really interesting that we don’t have a cultural panic about group think and intellectual homogeneity among the most powerful money men in the country. all the more interesting when a bunch of them have clearly lost their mind.

The least exciting but perhaps most plausible explanation for Epstein’s years of impunity is that both the state and his community treated his abuse of girls the way they treat other men’s abuse of girls every day: with indifference.

Focus on the people and politicians that have completely demonized a group of people and political party so that they wouldn't accept money to build better warning systems (2/2)

Focus on this! It took Noem 3 days(!) to authorize deployment of search and rescue, and a week for teams to actually arrive. And focus on local officials, who reportedly ignored warnings to give evacuation orders for hours. (1/2)
