To be honest, if finances were tight D&D would be one of the *last* games I'd consider as my one game - and that's coming from a 5e fan. You could quite honestly pick up two-or three other complete systems combined for less than keeping up with D&D.

I'm convinced there's an annual conference where all the people in charge of writing up start-player rules for boardgames, and all the designers responsible for renaming the GM in every new ttrpg get together to plan out how they're going to re-reinvent the wheel for the coming year.

It's where TTRPG packages go to die.

You know just yesterday my brother asked me what was my favorite Actual Play besides Critical Role/Dimension 20. I said either Glass Cannon or Mystery Quest ... then thought about it and said probably Mystery Quest.

I guess I have to change my answer now! lol

Drive-Thru says the book was last updated in 2022. Shadowdark went to Kickstarter in 2023 and was released in 2024.

I backed the Kickstarter for "Witch Lords of Skull Mountain" and it arrived a couple weeks ago ... but I'll be honest, I hadn't heard much buzz about it so I didn't put a priority on reading it. But now that I am ... this thing is just packed with lots of great little flavorful adventures!

That feeling when you find a creator who you'd normally agree with 100%, but you can't watch/read/listen to their work because they're such an asshole about it. #OSRProblems

(follow up: If you have to advertise that your work is free from BS, it's probably 100% BS).

Recap of the RPG action I got in at a local mini-convention this past weekend.

I'm 100% with you. I miss a lot from 'old' D&D, but felt 5e was better mechanically. For me Shadowdark takes all the best things from both and fits them into one.

And sorry for being pedantic, but I think Kelsey knocked it out of the park and just want to see her get her due. :)

Tom's channel is terrific. When I was trying to decide if Shadowdark was for me, this actual play was the deciding factor.

Hot Take: If you can't discuss a new TTRPG without commenting on how bad D&D/WotC is, it's not a good look for the TTRPG you're promoting. "It's better than this shit" is not the compliment you think it is.
