Larry Summersβ sexism is jeopardizing his power and privilege, but the entire economics profession hinders progress for women
In 2024, only about 1 in 3 newly minted economics Ph.D.s were women.
This piece I wrote for @theconversation.com argues that the Summers/Epstein debacle reflects what the data show: systemic bias in the economics professionβs practices and culture. That bias influences who succeeds and who is sidelined. #EconSky theconversation.com/larry-summer...

The American Economic Association should select its president through an open election with multiple candidates.
NBER, BREAD, and JPAL should allow self-nominations for membership, rotate the committees that decide, and provide feedback to rejected applicants.

One thing I feel like everyone needs to understand: those social-democratic Scandinavian nations we're all jealous of? Their market economies are *less regulated* than ours. More free. It's just that they collect a lot of taxes on the back end & fund social services & infrastructure.

If Trump replaces Cook by then, he will have appointed a majority on the Board of Governors, who approve regional Fed appointments. π§΅
