It would be ok to spend money. The thing we are looking for is ease of use, especially when multiple people may be dropping in.

1956
Dr. Elam and Dr. Peter Safar prove that mouth-to-mouth resuscitation is an effective lifesaving method. Drs. Elam, Safar, and Archer Gordon play leading roles in promoting rescue breathing to professional healthcare providers and the public alike.16
For the first time in human medicine, an external defibrillator successfully restores a steady rhythm to a quivering heart. Harvard cardiologist Dr. Paul Zoll leads the study with funding from the AHA.
1957
The United States military adopts the mouth-to-mouth resuscitation method to revive unresponsive victims.
In a way, it's so strange to think of procedures as being invented βΒ like CPR in 1960 β and that they didn't exist before that. If people suddenly lost consciousness, hardly anyone would have any clue what to do. So many things that are easy to take for granted.

I finally found the time to listen to this excellent podcast on space economics.
Excellent questions but what really makes it stand out are the answers by @akhilrao.bsky.social. I have never heard someone explain the principles of economics applied on space issues as clearly as clearly as here.

#EconSky: I need some data nerd insights re:CPI data.
I've always treated CPI data as "month end" - i.e. March 2025 is "March 31". I just noticed the date for CPI data from FRED for the 1st (i.e. "March 1"). Is "March" data in FRED *actually* the Feb data? Or is it a forced-defaulting to the 1st?

Miners expected a median price of $80.5K for BTC, realized year-end price was $93.4K.
21/23// We also survey minerβs on their sentiments. One of my favorite questions asked their expectation of bitcoin price at the end of 2024. Turns out, the miners (who have survived several crypto-cycles at this point) were slightly too pessimistic.

Grid showing profitability for electricity rates and efficiency for an assumed BTC price.
20/23// However, that profit margin is highly dependent on the intersection of energy costs and efficiency. Blue combinations in the chart below are profitable, red ones are not (recall that our current efficiency estimate is about 25 J/TH).

BTC cost, revenue, and margin.
19/23// Finally, one of my favorite parts β revenue and costs. Iβm going to gloss over a bunch of stuff (halvenings, competition, etc) to show just this graph. The cost (per bitcoin) has increased. The rise in the price of Bitcoin means that there is still a healthy profit margin though.
