I don't think it's ludicrous at all. Travis kills the "right" kinds of people in the right place for the "right reasons. Scorsese doesn't give him any redemption in that mirror shot on purpose, the fact that society gave a mad dog dispensation is meant to be an indictment.

The resolution in Taxi Driver is vital, though, because the same violence that was instilled in him in Vietnam was the same violence that brought him to the Palantine rally was the same violence that brought him to the brothel. It's still there and it's still fundamentally corrosive.

AND it's a message completely and utterly supported by its companion pieces: Rolling Thunder and Raging Bull. Schrader's head was in a pretty particular place and that place was the way that men are rewarded for the violence that strips them of their humanity and any hope at happiness.

Saying that the ending of Taxi Driver is “all in Travis' head” shows a depressing lack of media literacy. The ending being a dream would undermine the entire movie, which is a story about a broken man being rewarded for violence by a sick society.
