Associate Professor of Sociology at Florida Gulf Coast University. My work is at the intersection of things like media, technology, pop culture, environmental sociology

05.06.2025 00:49 β π 6 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Going to be spending more time here. But it is hard getting the network from X and Facebook.
13.05.2025 11:09 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0It IS sad. But this also reinforces why we need to engage. Imagine a critical race theorist or critical feminist on Rogan. Right now the audience hears a very narrow and one sided take on some of these issues.
09.12.2024 18:21 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0That is hard. But other than Bernie Sanders no one in the left side of politics seems to engage with the podcast infrastructure which is heavily favorites right now to right wing propaganda.
09.12.2024 17:36 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0This is indeed a major problem and budget cuts and political motivations have attacked these programs.
The best we can do perhaps is to connect to those people who vote differently and to build genuine connections and through that emphasize the importance of these programs.
I mean that is an empirical question that requires some thoughtful analysis but it likely is a struggle. But libraries and the internet can offer free or low cost materials I suppose.
Support and funding for after school programs is another.
Parents can expose their kids to critical thinking and give them accurate history lessons. But learning is already less of a priority in the neoliberal university.
09.12.2024 01:59 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0That has been my experience.
08.12.2024 17:30 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0It is also an exciting time for sociological analysis. Students (including those that self identify as conservative) want this discourse. They just donβt want to be silenced or called names. My approach is to always use data and evidence and say from policy stance these are the options.
08.12.2024 16:10 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Right now upper division courses are less under scrutiny but I suspect the nov 5 election will lead to changes.
It is a shame I am a firm believer that sociology is agnostic to political parties as we are critical of systemic forces but you can use our concepts and approaches for understanding
So it is a little more complicated. The BOG has requested a major revision of Gen Ed and courses like social problems are removed from Gen Ed (but can be offered). Courses focused on race gender climate change were removed or altered. philosophy was under scrutiny because βideasβ was vague.
08.12.2024 16:03 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 4 π 0Yeah you are right! It would also protect sociology now that the discipline is under attack in Florida.
08.12.2024 15:37 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Isnβt that what we call sociology of leisure? I agree though that it would be very beneficial for the discipline to have this focus.
08.12.2024 15:19 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0How can you quickly figure out who on here is a bot?
06.12.2024 16:41 β π 6 π 0 π¬ 0 π 02000 and 2004 would like a word with you. And Bernie voters in 2016.
02.12.2024 21:10 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Kendrick Lamar just casually dropping a new album. It reminds me of Earl Sweatshirt but darker, grittier and more somber.
22.11.2024 18:01 β π 8 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0And yes I am a dual citizen so I also added folks from Netherlands
22.11.2024 17:10 β π 4 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0So glad to see a growing community here. I am excited to spend more time here. If I added you it likely means you engage in critical sociology, in analysis of pop culture, or critical media literacy.
