adjusting to "we're just gonna let you have a nice time as long as you want" is pretty jarring there. I've run into a few cases of "we don't have tables. Actually.... if you can finish in 1.5 hours we could squeeze you in", and I just laugh and say that won't be a problem.

I read those and really liked them!

I worked light manual farm labor (driving a hay raking tractor, loading hay trucks, not actual harvesting) for a few seasons. If you haven't done it, it's hard to comprehend how brutal the conditions are, and how much the piece-work nature of the jobs drives you to work yourself to death.

Other highlights: they guy seems to revel in the fact he was a fuckup in his 20s, but through the grace of god and his father's assets he was able to turn things around and run a farm that exploits immigrants.

Other highlights: FL's e-verify requirement doesn't apply to current employees, so he knows he's still employing undocumented people, and he sorta giggles at "they just need to keep their jobs". Which, fun times, because now a threat of firing, or a workplace injury is a threat of deportation.

Growing up in central California rice country, this story is not surprising, but none the less infuriating. The H-2A program, which this ghoul uses to get seasonal labor brings people into potentially lethal work conditions. Bonus: he's fighting legislation to mandate worker protections.
