๐ŸšจThere is a hidden issue in US immigration detention: the treatment of pregnant, postpartum, and nursing women. ๐Ÿšจ

Despite ICE's own policies against detaining these individuals, reports of medical neglect, miscarriages, and nutritional deprivation have been documented.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ New from MiSC scholar Jenna Loyd for @publicbooks.bsky.social.

The article challenges the idea that "the border" is just a line on a map. Instead, it's a technologyโ€”a tool that mixes law, territory, bureaucracy & policing to control human mobility.

Many thanks to the Journal of American Constitutional History for creating an online space for publishing legal historical work, esp. since making this piece accessible to scholars and advocates was my number one priority.

This article is extremely problematic. Creates a caricatured portrait of Democrats and Republicans (and frankly, needed more fact checking on this point). Also premised on very simplistic assumptions re elections and voters. Finally, their poll data says nothing about voters' views of enforcement.

USAID didnโ€™t fail. It fed 127,000 kidsโ€”then was erased mid-crisis. No speech. No tribute. Just silence. They didnโ€™t end a program. They liquidated a covenant. The last American promise not built on conquestโ€”but care.

"Virginiaโ€™s economy and prosperity depend on the strength and integrity of our higher education system. It is outrageous that officials in the Trump Department of Justice demanded the Commonwealthโ€™s globally recognized university remove President Ryanโ€”a strong leader who has served UVA honorably and moved the university forwardโ€”over ridiculous โ€˜culture warโ€™ traps. Decisions about UVAโ€™s leadership belong solely to its Board of Visitors, in keeping with Virginiaโ€™s well-established and respected system of higher education governance. This is a mistake that hurts Virginiaโ€™s future."

My statement with @markwarner.bsky.social on reporting that President Jim Ryan was pressured to resign from the University of Virginia by the Trump Administration:

Cville: 3pm today, at the Rotunda. you donโ€™t have to love Jim Ryan, I sure donโ€™t, but Trumpโ€™s DOJ forcing his replacement by Youngkin would be an absolute disaster for anyone affiliated with UVA, and honestly for our region at large.

the president does not actually have the power to fire a university president or a museum director, but if elites simply roll over under pressure, then effectively he does

it has never been clearer that undocumentedness is the outcome of processes of ILLEGALIZATION. it's not something a person does, it's something the state does to a person. The state is doing this to hundreds of thousands overnight, so it's especially shocking, but it's part of broader illegalization

๐ŸšจNEW: Erez Reuveni, the DOJ lawyer fired for his honesty in the Kilmar Abrego Garcia case, sends Congress a whistleblower letter detailing lawlessness at the DOJ around the CECOT deportations.

He says Emil Bove told the DOJ to respond to likely court orders blocking flights with "fuck you."

DISASTROUS. This means they will send people to horrific situations with no due process โ€” in direct violation of promises the Solicitor General made to the Court in previous cases.

This greenlights sending people to be enslaved in Libya or tortured in any random foreign country.
