Missouri Supreme Court refuses to block transgender health care ban.

We will continue to explore every legal avenue to protect the rights and health of transgender people in Missouri.

We filed a lawsuit asking the court to do the same and suspend the implementation of House Bill 1's new congressional maps until Missouri voters can approve or reject the measure. Read more: www.aclu-mo.org/news/missour...

Previous Secretaries of State and Attorneys General have agreed with the established precedent that referred legislation is suspended upon receipt of the referendum petition. In 2017, SOS Jay Ashcroft announced that the so-called right-to-work law was suspended after receiving 300,000+ signatures.

Our lawsuit seeks to suspend House Bill 1 and prevent state election authorities from using the new maps until the referendum process is complete.

Just in: We filed a lawsuit on behalf of Missouri voters against the State for violating Missourians’ right to referendum by enacting the HB1 congressional maps before voters have the opportunity to approve or reject the measure as provided by the state constitution.

Breaking: The Missouri Supreme Court declined to take up the state's appeal to reinstate Missouri's ban on abortion and several restrictions that prevented access to care. This means that abortion care will remain available in Missouri.

The court rewrote the ballot language for the anti-abortion Amendment 3, including the summary statement that voters will see on the ballot and the fair ballot language which informs voters of what a yes and no vote will mean.

Just in: Court finds both the legislature's and the Secretary of State's summary statement and fair ballot language insufficient; orders new language. More to come.

Breaking: We are in Court fighting to to ensure fair and accurate ballot language on the misleading, anti-abortion Amendment 3, which would end the right to reproductive freedom in Missouri. Missourians are required to have fair and accurate ballot language when asked to change the constitution.

"The current status quo leaves some people who experience mental illness or disabilities trapped in judicial limbo and languishing in jail while the state fails to provide the necessary care to allow the detained person to advance through the judicial system."

"The state has a statutory and constitutional obligation to assess and treat all individuals that courts have deemed incompetent to stand trial in a timely manner," said Gillian Wilcox, Director of Litigation at the ACLU of Missouri.

Missouri law requires competency evaluations to be conducted within 60 days of a court order. According to obtained documents, it often takes approximately six months for someone to be evaluated.
