Pushed away from the bot-filled hellscape of Twitter, the blind contrarians have made their way here. Combined with the feverish descent into authoritarian fascism, people want to feel right more than ever. It doesn't matter if they are actually right, as long as they can feel like they are.

When he was younger he was fairly articulate. (Though, invariably and forever, full of s**t.)
Re-upping this for anyone who missed it: Julie Roginsky and I launched a new series showing how Russia attacked the 2016 election to elect Trump. We wonβt let Republicans rewrite history.

Starship is the most powerful rocket ever built and the future of SpaceX. But it keeps blowing up, and no one knows if Elon Musk can fix it, Jeff Wise reports.
28.07.2025 02:00 β π 7 π 5 π¬ 2 π 2βThe question is not, βCan you build an upper stage that is reusable with high-performance rocket engines?β The question is, βCan you do it cost-effectively, and can you do it with quick reusability turnaround?ββ
No one is saying Starship is doomed. Yet.

18.07.2025 10:05 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The deadly crash of an Air India flight last month was caused by fuel switches being turned off. Jeff Wise reports that it has led to a furious debate about whether that was intentional.

10 years ago the first physical evidence of the missing plane was found on La RΓ©union. Today, unprecedented new evidence about the sea life on it puts the find in a new context, overturning assumptions about the debris' meaning.

It's even more damning that the two switch-flicks happend not quite simultaneously, but a second apart -- so it didn't somehow happen as a result of accidentally being knocked
13.07.2025 02:54 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Esp given 1-second gap between one switch being flipped & the other.
Captain Steeve has come out saying that no way could it be accidental, btw. So it seems that consensus is settling on the idea that this was mass murder/suicide.
Juan Brown says that with first officer being the pilot flying, the captain would have their right hand on the throttle up to rotation speed, then remove it. No one's hand should have been near the throttle at liftoff, as it's too late for an abort.
Hard to see how it could be accidental.
Excerpt from preliminary report into Air India crash, stating that one of the pilots apparently shut off fuel to both engines immediately after takeoff.
India has released the preliminary report into the crash of Air India 171. One of the pilots apparently shut off fuel to the engines seconds after takeoff so it couldn't climb. The other pilot noticed & the fuel was switched back on, but it was too late.
Accident, or pilot suicide?
Hi Will, I'm working on a story about Starship for @nymag.com, would love to cite your work, could we connect? thx.

27.06.2025 16:36 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0An industrious investigator could find historical marine tracking data, look up what fishing boats were where, and ask them if they saw anything. After all, ships at sea are one of the few industries where there's always someone awake at all times.

Itβs a horrible crash. I want to wait for officials to release more information so we can try to make some sense of it

But lobbing bombs at a smaller, poorer nation can be harder than it seems, as I explain in my latest for @nymag.com @intelligencer.com

For starters, the "give powerful law-breakers the benefit of the doubt" mindset has got to go.
Hopefully will write something once it becomes clearer what might have happened.
At the moment I'm a little puzzled as to why there's so little ADS-B data
I agree that it doesn't sound ideal. Flightradar24 has issued a correction saying they looked at the data in more detail and determined that the aircraft had back-taxied and did in fact use the whole runway on takeoff.
