Chilling, very sad aviation story from @jeffwise.bsky.social via @jfallows.bsky.social. After the collision last winter, Trump took off after DEI, because he’s a jerk & plenty of people believe anything he says. The real story is about everything being routine until it wasn’t, & dozens were dead.

Inside the Cockpit of the Helicopter That Caused the Potomac Air Disaster Two Army pilots went on an ill-conceived training mission. Within two hours, 67 people were dead.

This is a very powerful piece by @jeffwise.bsky.social in @intelligencer.com

Among the shocking details to me: How inexperienced *both* of the Army helicopter pilots were. (As an amateur, I had much more flying experience than both of them, combined.)

Worth reading.

A Private Jet Full of Vegas Revelers Never Made It Home. Would They Have Been Safer Flying Commercial? Fancy fliers are creating a huge boom in private-jet travel, no longer the exclusive province of Fortune 500 companies, Donald Trump, or Taylor Swift. Yet for all the allure of flying private, it’s a ...

Personally owned or chartered jets are potent signifiers of over-the-top wealth, redolent of exclusivity and power, yet they evoke all of the darker aspects of that privilege and are a rather dangerous luxury [ @jeffwise.bsky.social @vanityfair.com ] www.vanityfair.com/style/story/...

New Search: Week 3 [S2Ep48 video] It's summertime in the southern ocean, but the weather isn't playing nice. Plus: accident investigation insights from NASA

The Ocean Infinity survey vessel Armada 86 05 has finished its third weeking scanning the seabed where MH370 is believed to have ended up after vanishing from radar screens. It made some progress but spent much of the time stymied by severe weather

Oh thank you! I sort of found myself going off more than I expected to. I think the interviewer expected me to think that supersonic businesss jets are neat and fun rather than a sign of something being deeply wrong with society... :)

Truly, it's amazing how we can let this guy dominate our lives for a decade and so many pundits still haven't formed any coherent idea of what the guy is like.

The 777 was engineered with simply massive amounts of redundancy to prevent failures from cascading, making the kind of scenario you're proposing virtually impossible. If you're legitimately interested in raising the possibility, I would strongly encourage you to research it out.

Thanks for this, Ben. Is Ocean Infinity posting these somewhere? This kind of daily report is great, I'm not aware that they've ever done this before.

The issue isn't how difficult something is to think about, but how difficult it is to happen. There's simply no demonstrable mechanism by which the plane accidentally stops transmitting ADS-B etc within seconds of passing the last waypoint in Malaysia.

There's a whole lot of things that would have to happen by chance, at just the right time. I haven't seen anyone lay it out in a way that makes sense.

I'm definitely interested in any failure modes which may have contributed to the evidence as it was collected. But I would imagine that the odds of a particular malfunction occurring at the exact moment as a sophisticated hijack was underway would be quite low.

If Biden thought that he was about to hand power to a man who was about to shred fundamental legal norms, then violating the norms of Presidential pardons for his son & a few others was arguably not too bold but too timid. He protected the few & left the rest of us defenceless

Armada 86 05 approaches Fremantle, my putative plan is slightly ahead of actual progress to Inner Pilot Boarding Ground, expected 15:00hrs AWST, Tues 23rd.

Fremantle Port movements information shows departure 20:30hrs AWST to #MH370 search area.

No. The scenario just doesn't fit the data. And if the pilots were dead/unconscious at the end of the flight, the plane would have been found on the seabed by now.

A lot of strong claims based on cherry-picked evidence. There's too much of this in MH370 world: people trying to make a strong case, rather than weighing the full scope of evidence impartially. In reality, the hypoxia scenario is all but impossible.

Truly jaw-droppingly astonishing that Bill Barr's whitewashing of the Mueller report was accepted at face value, even though the document itself was released immediately after.

Update: Kevin Rupp has posted on the other site that A86 05 has turned south, presumably to avoid bad weather. Unless the ship accelerates this will likely delay the resumption of the search.
