Honestly, my experience with the series peaked and ended with Black Ops 3. It was the most creative the series got even if the whole thing felt like they picked up a wrongfully rejected script to F.E.A.R. 3 and injected their usual R-Political/White Savior Nonsense into it.

Black Ops: What if our investment in weapons technology destroys us?

Advanced: What if a corporate douchebag ran the country?

Ghosts: What if Chuck Norris had the power of ASTRAL PROJECTION!! ...or something.

There is, but it's mostly built around paranoid nonsense with tentative grasps on reality. It's best to think of COD as alternate universe story arcs split between Modern Warfare, Black Ops, Advanced Warfare and Ghosts.
