Kenney would be a plausible candidate. He speaks (or used to speak) passable French, and he’s a pretty good politician.

He was also a decent minister in that he listened to his senior officials and trusted them. None of this β€˜deep liberal state’ paranoia.

It’s great timing. Last sitting day before the MPs head back to their ridings until late January. And then his review at the nd of Jan.

But the delegates have to vote in person and so most will be from Alberta. Not sure how much that will matter.

And over in the Canada Conservative subreddit, it’s a flurry of racist comments and accusations of bribery.

Every accusation is a confession.

Yes, the death penalty was on the books until 1999 even though the penalty was abolished in the Criminal Code in 1976.

i believe that the last execution under the NDA was in 1945.

It’s a bit inaccurate - the guy in question self-deported, but he was issued with a removal order. Presumably he complied to preserve his chances of coming back.

MIRPS - Home The Comprehensive Regional Protection and Solutions Framework (MIRPS) promotes response to forced displacement in Central America and Mexico.

Canada is already a member of the MIRPS Support Platform, along with many other countries and international organizations.

But initiatives such as this will not put a halt to self-selection. Migrants will go to where they have the best opportunities for status and a decent future.

Opinion: A better way to manage the border after the collapse of the Safe Third Country Agreement A Biden-era initiative shows the way forward for managing migration - and Canada could lead such a program without the United States

@dougsaunders.bsky.social is always a good source for migration related reporting.

Indeed, burden sharing within our own hemisphere should be an objective for both the US and Canada. The MIRPS initiative (link in comments) is one of the ways we could get there.

Opponents of the current administration have to learn that having a big happy march once every few months is not effective protest. Nor is sharing memes and making jokes on late night TV.

It has to be continuous and relentless, and in view of the media.

Bulgarian government resigns after mass anti-corruption protests Prime minister makes announcement before parliament vote on no-confidence motion filed by opposition

Bulgaria has had a lot of difficulty over the last 35 years, though being admitted to the EU and becoming a full member of the Schengen zone were both huge steps. Corruption has been persistent and is still pervasive, but a new generation - more exposed to what life is like elsewhere - are fed up.

This former inmate says he was assaulted by guards. Maplehurst lost the security camera footage that could corroborate his claims A lawyer described it as a suspicious pattern for the Ontario jail, which was recently criticized for losing footage of abusive mass strip searches.

Your reminder that Maplehurst is a provincial correctional facility. This is Ford's responsibility and I can't believe that his government is not being held to account for the atrocious abuses that have taken place there.

Opposition parties warn PM not to appoint Mark Wiseman ambassador to U.S. Bloc and Conservatives say the financier, a close friend of Mark Carney, isn’t qualified to represent Quebec’s interests in Washington

I’m not crazy about political appointments, but the ambassador to the US is a special case. The US needs to be certain that he or she has the ear of the PM. The foreign service knows this and supports whoever is in that role. Our embassy in Washington is not a one-person shop.

The last few thousand years really picked up the pace.

It always amazed me that Indigenous Canadians were living a very similar lifestyle at the time of contact as they had been living since well before the pyramids were built.

Not to say there wasnβ€˜t progression: knowledge was passed down.

It’s amazing that the time between the beginning of recorded history and the present represents just over 1% of the time between the use of fire and now. For the remaining 99%, we have to use the fossil and archeological evidence.

Humans made fire 350,000 years earlier than previously thought, discovery in Suffolk suggests Groundbreaking find makes compelling case that humans were lighting fires much earlier than originally believed

When I studied physical geography, I had to get used to geologic time scales.

But the timeline of human existence floats lower than an iceberg, given that recorded history only represents the last 5,000 years, at most.

Humans figured out fire 395,000 years before that.
