Honestly having a wide and well rounded variety of inspirations will help in any case.

Videos about natural disasters/nuclear meltdowns inspired conflict. Catholic mass inspired hierarchies in my pantheon. All my friends (literally all of them) naming their cats after food inspired myths.

But also I’m a writer who took one (1) psych course in college so take everything I say with a grain of salt.

Make sense externally.

You could def use this as like, a cultist ‘seeing evidence’ of their god as a self fulfilling prophecy, or having a lot of ‘little truths’ that SOUND like they make sense and are logical until you think about it for more than a second. People tend to follow an internal logic, even if it doesn’t—

Also, all the little things (seemed to be) true, even if they didn’t work in the big picture, and that was used to justify said spirals.

The mental illness metaphor actually makes perfect sense!!!

I remember back during some of my darkest days, my depression/anxiety/insecurities made PERFECT SENSE because A: I had a very subjective perspective and B: they FELT true. I over read into things to provide evidence for my spirals.

I actually like, totally understand how King Crimson works; I saw it explained once as skipping scenes in a movie and it just clicked for me.
