“Alien land laws were unconstitutional decades ago and remain unconstitutional, impractical, and xenophobic today. Our nation has had a long, unfortunate history of anti-Asian sentiment that led to the exclusion of immigrants from certain countries like the 1881 Chinese Exclusion Act, barring people from becoming citizens, and prohibiting land ownership by Asian immigrants, like the California Alien Land Law of 1913. All of these policies were rightfully overturned many years ago and should not be revisited here in 2025.

“Our Constitution clearly protects property rights for Michiganders, and our civil rights laws protect individuals from discrimination based on national origin. House Bills 4233-4234 do nothing to help Michiganders struggling to afford a decent home or solve our housing crisis. In fact, these bills would make it harder for realtors to do their jobs, further xenophobia, create a logistical nightmare, and would absolutely be challenged quickly in court for being unconstitutional.”

I was proud to stand in solidarity today with my children's dedicated teachers, support staff, and administrators. Our children’s future depends on us standing up and fighting for them. I won’t back down.

At a time when schools are already facing record cuts, we must do everything in our power to ensure fair salaries for teachers, free breakfast and lunch for every child, transportation, full funding for at-risk students, and CTE.

We should be working to strengthen our schools, not stripping them of the resources that shape the future of our children.

Michigan relies on $550 million in federal funding to support critical school programs, and if that funding is slashed, our state’s education budget could take a devastating 10% hit.

Yet just two weeks ago, Michigan House Republicans voted to gut $5 billion from our School Aid Fund, while the current presidential administration actively works to dismantle the Department of Education.

As a mother of four young children in Michigan's public schools, I know firsthand that an attack on our education system is an attack on our families—and we will not stand for it.

This morning, thousands of educators, parents, students, and community leaders participated in a national “walk-in” to send a clear message to our government: protect our students and families.

Since the onset of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, over 2,000 Ukrainian refugees have resettled in Michigan, many of them my constituents, now living in Warren, where a proud and resilient Ukrainian American community has continued to enriched our neighborhoods.

Senate Bill 8 and House Bill 4002 were signed into law by the governor today, February 21, 2025. These two bills, known as Public Act 1 and 2 of 2025 modifies the minimum wage and the tipped wage schedule, effective today.

Sister District alum Michigan State Rep. @maixiong.bsky.social introduced a bill letting public employers boost workers’ health-plan contributions and requiring at least 80% coverage. It awaits Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s signature.

I urge my colleagues at all levels of government to stand against these types of harmful actions and work toward a system that reflects the best of America—a nation that welcomes, uplifts, and protects those in need.

Because HR19 doesn’t list specific cities or institutions, it gives Republicans broad government overreach, and a blueprint for them to dictate which municipalities and institutions are in violation of this rule. This sets such a dangerous precedent and is a clear violation of government overreach.

I voted no, because this resolution is baseless, extremely vague, and will devastatingly block communities from receiving critical taxpayer dollars to improve our roads, infrastructure, parks, public safety, and economic development.

HR19 prevents your tax dollars from being returned to your city, township, village, county, college, or university if Republicans perceive or allege that your municipality and educational institutions do “not comply with federal immigration enforcement measures.”

This week, Michigan House Republicans passed House Resolution 19 (HR19) to modify our House rules. This resolution governs how we will conduct official business within our chamber for the next two years.
