I'll miss Miggledy. He's been an outstanding president with his warmth and empathy for those less well off, the oppressed, and those facing discrimination and battling for equality. However, i'm sure Catherine Connolly will continue his great work and be another formidable Uachtarán.

Despite all the horrors that people remember today, leaders, including those who bow their heads lowest at Cenotaphs, push for ever more armaments, rattle their sabres ever more loudly, and hurtle us towards global conflict.

We need to strive to make war a thing of the past. That would be the greatest tribute we can give.

My Gt grandfather was killed at Colenso, South Africa. A great uncle died at Galipoli.
My maternal grandfather was royal navy in WW1, and on merchant convoys in WW2. An uncle fought with the American 1st division at Omaha, another was with the Austrailian navy. I dont need a poppy to remember them.

As people observe their remembrance Sunday today, it would do well to also remember fascism didn't end in 1940s. It continued in Europe well into the latter decades of the 20th century.
