Overall, I find that progress towards EU membership reduces the saliency and intensity of these appeals, although this effect is contingent on those neighbouring countries that contain ethnic kin (e.g., the UK for Ireland; Romania, Slovakia, etc. for Hungary) also being members of the EU.
