Or, if we want a very simple definition, I propose: “systematic knowledge” (the etymology of “science” is from the Latin scientiae, meaning knowledge). Note that I do not intend the term “science” to mean only “quantitative” or “Western” science. As above, while those are the approaches I have used in most of my research, I also value qualitative and non-Western approaches, including those based on Indigenous knowledge such as mātauranga Māori (Black & Tylianakis, 2024; Moko-Painting et al., 2023; Muru-Lanning, 2020; Smith, 1999). While my own experience in such domains is very early, I am enjoying learning more about them through my collaborations with Māori colleagues and students (Pavlovich et al., 2024; Savage et al., 2024).
