How to create a better research poster in less time (#betterposter Generation 2).
I love @mikemorrison.bsky.social's take on how to make better scientific posters: www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYk2.... I know this approach would have been highly frowned upon when I was making them, but we can all agree on that posters sessions in general kind of suck

Update on the Tidal migration - works well, but I did not realize they do not have an podcasts.

I made the jump from Spotify (after using it for... 17+ years?) to Tidal. I am curious to whether I will notice a difference in QOL or not.

OK, this is hilarious: if you want to disable the AI search function in Google, you can add a swearword to your search query.

I don't want this to be a general complaining-about-AI post, because, it is here to stay and the fact of the matter is that it *can* be useful when used right. But I'm curious how different people approach LLMs
17.07.2025 08:50 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0
I am also vary of the extra computational power introduced by any "politeness". Same goes with using a LLM for asking simple questions a Google search would provide.
17.07.2025 08:50 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0
I feel "humanizing" the LLM will make me less critical of its output, and more forgiving of its hallucination. If a person gives me something that isn't 100% factual, or based on hearsay, I am more inclined to forgive that, but inquiring an LLM is not a casual convo imo
17.07.2025 08:50 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0
I am surprised that some of my peers do not have the same attitude. For me, I think it is extremely important to treat the LLM as a machine, not as a human being
17.07.2025 08:50 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0
had a convo yesterday with some colleagues how we use LLMs - I strongly believe that the best approach is to give concise prompts without adding extra politeness fluff ("hello, can you give me ..."), because I do not want to view the LLM as a person, but a machine.

Currently reading: "not exactly" by Kees van Deemter, which praises the need for vagueness in a b/w world. This book does a good job of deconstructing the view that science is built on absolute, boolean truths, and that some things are just extremely difficult to classify (no matter how hard we try)

I also recommended the local uni library to pick up "Everything is Tuberculosis" by @johngreensbluesky.bsky.social. When writing my Ph.D. thesis on antibiot. resistance, I noticed how TB stands out from other microbes, and this book gives an earnest insight into the many-layered facets of TB.

another was "Hello World" by @fryrsquared.bsky.social. While a bit similar to the last one in theme, I love how Fry focuses on how algorithms shape our society for better and worse in e.g. justice and crime. Pairs well with the last book.
