A lot of folks at SDOT who care and want better but don't have the resources they need. That said, if a car lane was obstructed like this, it would absolutely be fixed by now.

Today is World Homeless Day, and after years reporting on this crisis, I'll just say: homelessness is neither inevitable nor intractable. It's the result of choices—political, economic, moral—that can be unmade.

And this: how we treat the unhoused is a bellwether for the violence we will tolerate.

Seattle council hasn't consistently put the most important issues on the top of its legislative agenda (downtown ad kiosks), so why haven't we banned gas leafblowers yet? I'd rather eliminate homelessness, but while we dither...

We can end homelessness, and therefore we should World Homeless Day reminds us that it is possible to end homelessness.

Five years ago, for the 10th World Homelessness Day, I wrote this brief call to action. Five years gone and little progress. But I stand by each word:

Only a small percentage of Seattle residents (around 5-10%) typically use them.

So encourage your Seattle friends and family and neighbors to use theirs too!

@seattledot.bsky.social I wanted to share these photos with you of the Stay Healthy St at 13th and Columbia (see also Google Street View at 12th and Columbia). Crosswalks are badly faded, daylighting nonexistent or not working, and the orange barrels kind of hidden. Something isn't working here!

This morning, I sat on the McClure “school street” and counted cars violating the closure during the 30 minutes before the first bell. There were 16, about one every two minutes.
