Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells (Boxed version)

A proggy bedroom recording by a insanely young first time musician somehow became a smash hit and helped put Virgin on the map. Even more impressive was that it was made up of one side-long instrumental composition split on two sides.

Gene Clark - No Other

Massive big budget album that flopped hard, leaving Gene’s career ruined. Forgotten and put of print until a major reevaluation years later. Now seen as a masterpiece of country rock and one of the 70s great albums.

Probably their most difficult album and a fan favorite. I’ve never cracked this nut, but I’ll chipping at it in hope I’ll get it someday. This is a proper rock opera with an orchestra

Sufjan Stevens - Seven Swans

Not my favorite by him, but the best for vinyl. His albums are epic and long, and honestly, I like have the skip button handy. This one has no fat. Simply beautiful folk music.

Alan Parson’s Project - I Robot

I’m glad they’ve fallen so out of favor. I got this for €5. Crazy. This album is incredible. Cheesy? yes. Prog excess? Of course. But why is this a bad thing? One of the great 70s albums.

Bought in Nejmegen. Jacob Lusk is maybe the best soul vocalist right now. This album is a masterpiece. I’m excited to hear where they go on the next one. And yes, I’ve become that person that leaves the plastic on.

Can’t say I hear a huge difference, but glad to hear they’re trying to polish up this definitely muddy album. They were never happy with Steve Albini’s studio, though they didn’t come with their top set of songs either.

Joni is always a good Sunday morning choice. This is the album is full of incredible songs beautifully performed. Every time I hear it, I perk up with each song. «That one!» Today it’s «For Free» that jumps out.

I may have teared up during the climax of «Let Down». Radiohead are in that shortlist of greatest bands of all time for a reason.

Can I squeeze any more enjoyment after a billion spins? Maybe if I pretend I’m at the cusp of adulthood still. Maybe if I sing at the top of my lungs. Maybe if I do air guitar to chords I could never imagine. Maybe I can tap into that love, another time.

Nick Cave & the Bad Seed - The Boatman’s Call

There’s some overplayed songs here, but it’s among his strongest full-album statements. I like introspective Nick more than abrasive Nick, so I can’t complain he followed this path for the subsequent 20+ years. Striking cover too.

The Moody Blues album Days of Future Passed on a green shelf

The Moody Blues - Days of Future Passed

The only of their albums I ever got into. A wonderful mix of psych rock and orchestra. The orchestral bits feel tacked on to great songs, instead of a sermons harmony. Still fantastic. RIP John Lodge.

Arguably the great alt-country album that nobody knows about. These Norwegians mix country, soul, and gospel with Talk Talk atmospherics. Their singer Paal Flaata has maybe the most gorgeous voice in Norway. A must hear!

I’ve yet to get into this one fully. CoFR are a Norwegian prog «supergroup» made from members of other prog bands you’ve never heard of. This is an epic fantasy prog trilogy. The first two I love!

Richard Dawson and Circle - Henki

A proggy, almost metal concept album about plants or something. I’m not here for the lyrics, but for the krautrock grooves and distinct vocals of Richard Dawson. Great stuff.

My dad said these guys dropped like a bomb so hard, no body knew what to do with their music. He said it was among the best live acts he’s ever seen, and even huge names at the top had their jaws blown off. They didn’t last long at all though.

Mozart Symphonies 25 and 29

I’m not huge on Mozart, but this set cost me a few dollars and I give a random disc a spin now and then. It had the 40th which I’ve loved since I was a child. The 25th is pretty good, pointing the way to the romantic period.
