The Berkeley Fire Department will be at the South Berkeley Library on Sept 20 to talk about how you can harden a home to make it less likely to burn in a wildfire. Save the date! 🏠🏠

At the start, when traffic is still free-flowing, there's unused street capacity, so leaving right away does let more people get out.

For this reason it's also recommended to pre-pack for evacuation on high risk days, the city has also recommended staying elsewhere if possible.

Berkeley apologizes for screw-up that led to surprise parking tickets A vendor failed to send out renewal notices to thousands of participants in Berkeley’s resident parking permit program.

Residents who use the street for car storage, if you recently got a parking ticket for an expired residential parking permit, you can get a refund.

The deadline for renewing permits has also been extended.

Finally, parked cars, especially illegally parked cars, are a serious obstacle during evacuations. For those with garages or driveways available, parking off-street is better.

Another finding is that families may run out of time to evacuate safely if their plan is to first regroup at home before evacuating.

Consider planning an alternate meetup location to go to directly in case an evacuation is needed at a time when family members are not at home.

The city of Berkeley's evacuation study for wildfire in the hills and tsunami by the bay is now available. One finding is that after the evacuation alert goes out, at first, roads are clear, but traffic will get worse as time goes on.

- Waiving late penalty for landlords newly covered by Measure BB who pay their registration fee late, as long as they pay by 1/2/2026. Many were unaware they had to pay and have paid once informed.

Owners of single-family homes can legalize previously unpermitted accessory units and have them inspected for safety while avoiding penalty fees as part of an effort to improve the safety of existing housing.

Protect your home, use City services to remove vegetation | City of Berkeley Get seasonal help disposing of vegetation such as shrubs, brush, limbs, wood, and bushes to clear your home of excess and flammable debris. Prepare for wildfire season by using a free City of Berkeley program that will take away shrubs, limbs, brush, and other “hard” vegetation you gather from your property.  Berkeleyans can sign up online for this service, known as our “Berkeley Chipper Program," to choose neighborhood chipping events or sign up to get an email when the next nearby event is scheduled.
