Reading Sarah Shipp's "Thematic Integration in Board Game Design" has had a profound impact on how I think about games. In particular, her three layers of theme model has really stuck with me.

Some of the best strategy games are elegant in their simplicity. For them, it's not about building out multiple paths to winning; it's about taking advantage of how different mechanics and elements resonate with each other and leaving space for creative thinkers to discover connections.
