Thrilled to debate the future of scientific publishing with Alex Freeman, founder of Octopus.ac, moderated by @jlrohmann.bsky.social & hosted @einsteinberlin.bsky.social in a suitably vibrant Berlin setting. Votes elegantly split half way before & after arguments - strikingly, many changed sides : )

That merely being “under review” by a Nature family journal is offered as a quality proxy for a paper is a tragic illustration of the extent to which academia is addicted to brands and outsources evaluation

Then we watch what happens to the relationship between the two variables once this selection is introduced :)

In a nutshell: the dice represent two causes for an outcome. Each roll (of two dice) represents the observed values for one individual in the data set. rules are introduced dictating which rolls can be written down (ie. recruiting high risk patients only defined as specific values).

I keep telling @pwgtennant.bsky.social he needs to write up this exercise as a tutorial / educational corner article ;) Maybe this will give him that necessary nudge!

No one teaches collider bias like @pwgtennant.bsky.social in the #CausalIntroCourse.

Lighthearted dice rolling 🎲 before the big reveal. Puzzled looks. Then 🤯 shock, as the implications for their research fields sank in. You could hear a pin drop during the compelling lecture that followed! 👏🏻

PubPeer - Fake Publications in Biomedical Science: Red-flagging Method... There are comments on PubPeer for publication: Fake Publications in Biomedical Science: Red-flagging Method Indicates Mass Production (2023)

A colleague just pointed me to some interesting discussion around (probably) the source of those numbers here: pubpeer.com/publications...

5-panel comic. (1) [teacher with long hair next to whiteboard] TEACHER: I’m supposed to give you the tools to do good science. (2) [teacher addressing students] But what *are* those tools? Methodology is hard and there are so many ways to get incorrect results. What is the magic ingredient that makes for good science? (3) TEACHER: To figure it out, I ran a regression with all the factors people say are important: [embedded list in sub-panel, cut off at end] Outcome variable: correct scientific results. Predictors: collaboration; skepticism of others’ claims; questioning your own beliefs; trying to falsify hypotheses; checking citations; statistical rigor; blinded analysis; financial disclosure; open data (4) TEACHER: The regression says two ingredients are the most crucial: 1) genuine curiosity about the answer to a question, and 2) ammonium hydroxide. (5) STUDENT: Wait, why did *ammonia* score so high? How did it even get on the list? LONG HAIR: ...And now you’re doing good science!
