The argument was predominantly made by Roger Ebert, who was sincere-ish but also kind of being a gadfly. He readily admitted he hadn't played many video games, and he ultimately came away persuaded he was wrong. So I don't think the argument was ever considered super compelling in the first place.

"Must video games be art?" is I think interesting and philosophically debatable

"CAN video games be art?" is not

It's why I never understood the argument that video games couldn't be considered art: for me, being capable of bringing forth that feeling of the sublime is what art
