And so says anyone managing young people in state schools. Parenting is something you have to learn….from your own competent parents or from state help. Getting a good start is not a given.

I absolutely do have favourite mugs, but I find myself carefully ensuring I drink out of each mug I own in rotation so they don't find out which are the favourites, because I don't want to hurt their feelings.

I am nearly 50 years old. I am aware mugs are not sentient.

Is it connected to the fact that more students ARE disadvantaged now? Percentages of children who are DA in Sheffield are higher for overall population now - assume that’s relevant in this cohort of students?
