Anyway, I’ve been reporting on this, but from what I was hearing, these efforts in New York are even more widespread in L.A., because the deportation regime is just much more aggressive there. One thing that really struck me while I was there is that they have this rapid response network, where people are constantly patrolling their neighborhoods to see if ICE is around and alert their neighbors. But what really stayed with me was something the mayor, Karen Bass, said when I interviewed her. She told me she relies on the rapid response network to know what ICE is doing in her city because ICE certainly isn’t telling her anything. I think that speaks to the ethos of this movement: No one is coming to save us. There’s nobody exercising power on our behalf — with a few exceptions. So people feel like they have to organize to protect their neighbors as best they can. And when she said that, it really drove that home for me.
