Stede Bonnet, from what Ed knows, is broke. The everything about him doesn't really align with that fact, but Ed, in their discussions of what exactly the two of them could afford re: rent and utilities, took a glance at Stede's checking and savings accounts and was a bit dumbfounded. He was wearing a silk shirt and a pout. Ed patted him on the back comfortingly - the silk was incredibly soft - and offered to buy his coffee. ("And a pastry?" Stede had asked. Ed, impressed by the gall of it all, nodded.) He doesn't have a job. He has an ex-wife and ex-kids, and a fractured relationship with his parents, who are dead. So, not so much fractured as broken. When people die that kind of severs your contact with them, unless Stede is a medium or something. Ed cannot drive home enough that he does not know this guy.

He doesn't really have prospects. Didn't go to school past secondary and doesn't have passions that could lead him into a career that would support the lifestyle he seems to like living. He left all of his money to his wife in some noble show of respect - Ed would call it martyrdom - when they broke up. Ed doesn't know the ins and outs of their relationship, but Stede talks about her the way he might talk about an eccentric aunt. ("And she paints, Ed," he had said, with a face on that betrayed both high esteem and the belief that being a painter is below, even, unemployment. Ed had googled her after the fact and found that she was very successful, when Stede had spoken about it as if it were a hobby.) He's kind of living a dead end life, which makes Ed sort of sad because, though he doesn't know the guy past his email address (mintjulep74@gmail.com), he does seem kind of pathetic in a way that makes you feel for him. Like he spent all day in the rain and trudged up to Ed's doorstep and said please sir, have you a room for me? in Victorian England, instead of what really happened which was that they met in a local coffee spot and shared a scone. Because Ed is giving, but he's not about to buy a full pastry for someone he's just met.
