Because it feels relevant as we continue to evaluate the media and our representatives’ statements, my favorite way to identify the active vs. passive voice.

it requires synchronous communication but at the same time cuts out all the multimodal aspects while giving you just enough to really notice their absence. At least text is obviously impoverished (and asynch is possible)

phone calls are the uncanny valley of comms and not even practical

hatred of phone calls, no competition. We will accept Whatsapp/Signal as well as Teams/Zoom calls before we will even consider the phone.

Amusingly, Godzilla is also the original name of Gojira (the band).

Yeah, there is definitely skill involved. Also making sure you don't turn the yolks into scrambled eggs because you didn't pay attention to the heat, etc. I still think it qualifies as a quick comfort-food-level dish though 😉

Carbonara is great for teaching Mise en Place 101. There's really not a lot to prep, and it's not hard, but the difference between doing it and not doing it is the difference between a smooth 10 mins in the kitchen and overdone pasta congealing while you pick grated finger bits out of the cheese.

I’d say that depends on the faculty 😁

I still have a pic from the blue drinks evening that miraculously survived a dozen mobile phone changes since then. Those were the times.

Heh, apparently MS stuff has crashed enough times for macOS to think it appropriate to auto-add the error reporting tool to my dock 😂

I have difficulties accepting this hypothetical because it feels like accepting that a thought would have an agreed-upon look seems to go against the definition of thought. Seems like this is creating an analogy or metaphor, not literally defining a look.

22.05.2025 08:40 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

as opposed to questions like “can something look like a thought?”

22.05.2025 07:18 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

It’s a concept with a relatively clear agreed-upon definition in terms of concrete components, so you can assess the degree to which something matches that definition?

Not sure that has a meaningful answer though.

25.04.2025 07:54 — 👍 2    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

I understood it as being an assumption that people are either more likely to want or more likely to not want, and the puzzle being figuring out which one it is from the answers given.

(It's clear that "want AND not-want" is the most likely state, but the Q is how much of that is e.g. "want")

Ah man what a missed opportunity to impose a NaN tariff! Or Inf, automated trading algos would have loved that.

03.04.2025 20:15 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

Using a random number generator for tariffs makes conceptually more sense than this and you could at least keep some sanity by defining a not-batshit-crazy range to sample from.

Just sad that there is no country they import from but not export to. Would have loved to see the divide by zero.

I’m literally trying and failing to come up with something that would make less sense than what they are actually doing.

03.04.2025 15:54 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

This is absolutely wild. Everyone knows you need to normalise by population size before converting trade deficits to tariffs.
