Yesterday, those who teach Intro to Sociology at Florida colleges (as opposed to universities) received a ready-made curriculum from the state and were ordered to teach it.

Yes, you read that correctly. The *state* is enforcing a curriculum on college profs, complete w/ the following restrictions:

A dynamical perspective on biological reproduction Classically, biological reproduction is explained as the building of a new organism from replicated genomic instructions. The corresponding theoretical model is von Neumann's self-reproducing machine, which relies on an invariant universal constructor that can build any machine from instructions. However, the reproductive incompatibility of species and the diversity of developing processes speak against the existence of a universal constructor. Without a universal constructor, the genome as representation of the organism is circularly defined: what the genome represents is specified by the developmental processes represented by the genome.
I propose to take invariant reproduction not as a premise, but as an emergent dynamical property.

Reproduction is seen as the iteration of a transform that maps one generation to the next, a transform shaped by the genome. Invariant reproduction then occurs when a reproductive sequence converges to a fixed point. A reproductive sequence may also diverge, converge to a cycle (multigenerational life cycle), or to one of several fixed points (non-genomic inheritance). When it does converge, it is necessarily to a stable point, implying that development is robust to perturbations. Finally, speciation can be understood as a process by which reproductive transforms become mutually incompatible, that is, the basins of attractions of the fixed points do not overlap any more. In this view, the genome is an inheritable constraint on development, not a representation of the organism. I suggest that this dynamical framework is a more coherent model of biological reproduction than von Neumann's computational framework.

In terms of what cures are being lost:

- Epstein-Barr virus is perhaps the major trigger for multiple sclerosis
- herpes simplex virus causes cold sores, genital herpes, infections in babies, deadly meningitis
- shingles virus causes an intensely painful disease

ICE at the polls! Bannon is basically yelling โ€œfireโ€ in a crowded theater here. His objective is to cause chaos (and suppress votes on the left). And itโ€™s already working.

This threat works on multiple levels and doesnโ€™t have to be โ€œrealโ€ to serve its purpose.

Let me explain & offer some advice.

The Board of Governors decided, unilaterally, that no published textbook in the field of sociology could be used in compliance with the law for an Intro to Sociology class. None.
Victor: There's not a single existing textbook on the market that could be used that would qualify under state law?
Zachary: Correct.
Victor: I'm sorry, that's kind of funny. Like, the absurdity of not a single sociology textbook getting past the censors. I mean, it makes me kind of proud of our colleagues, but...

I do want to shout-out my fellow sociologists, who have collectively created a discipline so woke that not a single one of our introductory textbooks can make it past Florida's censors.

Great work everyone.

"I'd like to share a story from a local paper in Coldwater, Michigan dated to the 9th of April, 1945. It tells how the US Army, under General Patton--the US 3rd Army--came onto what you might call a detention center just outside the village of Ohrdruf, Germany.

The US Army brought the leading citizens of Ohrdruf to tour the facility, which turned out to be part of the Buchenwald network of concentration camps. A US Army colonel told the German civilians who viewed the scenes, without muttering a word, that they were to blame.

One of the Germans replied that what happened in the camp was (quote) 'done by a few people, and you cannot blame us all.' And the American, who could have been any one of our grandfathers, said, 'this was done by those that the German people chose to lead them, and all are responsible.'

The morning after the tour, the Mayor of Ohrdruf killed himself. And maybe he did not know the full extent of the outrages that were committed in his community, but he knew enough. And we don't know exactly how ICE will use this warehouse. But we know enough.

I ask you to consider what the Mayor of Ohrdruf might have thought before he died. Maybe he felt like a victim. He might have thought, 'how is this my fault? I have no jurisdiction over this.' Maybe he would have said, 'this site was not subject to local zoning, what could I do?'

But I think, when he reflected on the suffering that occurred at this camp, just outside of town, that those words would have sounded hollow even to him. Because in his heart he knew--as we do--that we are all responsible for what happens in our community.

I urge the council to take action to stop, or stall, or at the barest minimum to think creatively about how to exercise oversight over this proposed ICE facility. Thank you."
