For Captured Carbon, Scientists Plot a Sub-Ocean Tomb It's a contentious idea, but supporters say storing CO2 under the seafloor could help address climate changeโ€”if it can scale up.

50-80 wind turbines, several DAC installations, undersea pipelines, and it still only captures 0.01% of what advocates say is needed, but who really knows if it's captured?

Indonesia turns traditional Indigenous land into nickel industrial zone Indonesia is building out a critical battery materials hub but the expansion of its nickel industy is infringing Indigenous rights

As Indonesians ready to go to the polls, Indigenous peoples in Sulawesi allege rights violations over the rapidly expanding nickel industry supplying battery materials for EVs.

Chuffed to have won the TRACE Prize for Investigative Reporting for an investigation I worked on about Indonesia's palm oil smallholders scheme - here's the Mongabay article (news.mongabay.com/2022/05/the-... ) and a Twitter thread I did about it back in the old days (twitter.com/philjacobius... )

In the Pitfall introduction, I similarly recount how an oil and gas CEO silenced a room of activists at a conference I was attending, simply by asking if any of them used oil.

Itโ€™s a successful rhetorical strategy, because it reflects an indisputable truth. We canโ€™t live in comfort without mining. Where I differ with this speaker, is what we should do about this dependence. If we need mining, especially to save the world from climate change, how well we do it must be everyoneโ€™s business. How do we minimize the harms?
