Decent chance for things to intensify in the coming hours. I'm gonna take a power nap and then go outside in ~20 minutes or so, since the forecast looks like things may pick up again then (at least for the northerners).

Near 45° N. My entire view was pillars for a solid ten minutes. Best auroras I’ve personally seen in a long time, so I think I’m happy to get some sleep and just set an alarm to check if things ramp up again in a couple hours.

My favorite bit is the end, where the eruption slows down and switches to punctuated bursting. Turn your volume up to hear the chugging of one of the cones in front of the pool as it enters a steam phase once Daisy quits erupting.

0946 MDT. Daisy has a shallow pool which jets for the first ~2.5 minutes of the eruption. It erupts at an angle (hard to see from this vantage point) to a max height of 60 or 70 ft. Here it is kicking off the eruption after a few big splashes from the pool.

Cones splashing continuously and vigorously now. We’re close.

Daisy is extremely regular right now, with most eruptions falling at ~1h50m apart. We are quickly approaching the expected time for the next eruption.

The cones you see in the front of the pool in this video start splashing as the eruption approaches. The splashing will get more intense soon.

It’s my day off from working in the geyser basins, so, naturally I’m at Upper Geyser Basin today to stare at holes until they boil.

Working for Yellowstone's geology department (NPS). 50% picking up trash and escaped hats in thermal areas, 40% maintaining logger equipment, 5% palling around with researchers to provide field support, and 5% getting stuck in bison jams.

I’m on “maxiflex” loosely based around four 10-hour days each week, because sometimes your commute time triples when the bison herd is moving the direction you want to go down one of the canyons or passes 😅

I guess I also have to finish my dissertation, but, details…

First week on the new job complete. Four 10-hour days is a bit brutal but my coworkers are delightful and I’m having a blast. Now I have to actually figure out how to back into parking spaces, because apparently that’s baked into federal white car culture.

I will be wrapping up my dissertation over the next few months *while* working for the park service and 🙃

I guess I don’t disagree? It’s not what I would choose to highlight when talking about NSF but I can plausibly imagine people that would connect with these points. Don’t love the ambiguity of the last point (safe from what?).

I really like my KAVU rope sling for something that stores a water bottle, snacks, and a jacket. Small organizer pockets. Lots of color/pattern options. My only complaint is that it *just barely* can't fit my 14 inch laptop inside and zip up, which means it can't double as a plane bag.
