"We shouldn't be giving the writers credit where credit isn't due," Sil you are SO goddamn right. Fans work hard at forging their own interpretations, so let the writers say it with their whole chest. Eg. Show us they aren't scared of letting two men or women kiss, like other in-game romances. 🔥

Yeah, Big Agree on all of this. While I did like that they had lots of incidental women NPCs whose entire character wasn't "Is Woman", the near total absence of any queer folks does sting. And after DL seemed pretty good about it, relatively speaking. (At least it seems to me maybe I'm wrong)

Anyways, thanks to anyone who stayed around and read this whole thing. I promise I'll be back with more Anduin Thoughts(tm) when the time comes.

I'll wait until I finish the max level campaign before I yell more about it. I also have some speculation about where his story might be going, but again, after that last campaign. So yeah, I was pleasantly surprised! I don't know if my reading is a common one or not, but it worked for me.

There's a few ways to spin it too, maybe Anduin only has limited access to the Light. Maybe he can only use it to heal, and maybe only under certain circumstances. Maybe it comes and goes. Maybe the relief of getting the Light back is squished when he realizes it didn't fix everything.

...in the same patch the problem is introduced feels Not Good.

If I'm feeling generous, which I am right now, don't get used to it, I still think there are good readings of this. A disability CAN be temporary, that doesn't make the experience of living with it invalid.

Right now all I know is that at the very end Anduin gets his Light back in time to heal Khadgar. I'm in two minds about this. On the one hand, Blizzard has already given Anduin a disability that they swept under the rug when it became inconvenient (chronic pain), so Anduin getting his Light back...

Think that's it for major complaints, they pretty much all fall under one of these categories. Unless I remember something later, then I'll scream some more.

Anyway, last part, going over the little bit I know about the max level campaign.

Lastly Anduin's talk with Alleria after they escaped Xal'atath in the nerubian city had the same vibe as A Little Patience. Why is this man teaching this otherwise competent woman to overcome an issue he himself was previously seen struggling with? With no transition of any kind? Boooooooo

Maybe he uses 'the Light rejected me/I was enslaved by darkness' to excuse actions that have nothing to do with either of those. There's a few ways his character could be taken. I still like him, but he would be a richer character if he was allowed to fuck up in a way that's entirely his own fault.

Second part, and this has been a long standing problem for Anduin's writing, he needs more flaws. I just talked about how his ability to make friends is his greatest strength, but that shouldn't be ALL THE TIME. There should be people he clashes with. Maybe he's petty or mean over a small thing.

Though I thought generally they did a good job of helping the player understand what he was feeling, it never really went into why. I know why, it's because his SL story is a fucking mess, but without that context it does sometimes feel like the narrative is saying "He's sad so you should be sad 🥺"

I'll take the time here to add in my complains, because I have more to say and since it's mostly positive, I figure I should put the whining in the middle. My two critiques are linked, that they did sometimes go too far towards uwu Sad Boy, and Anduin needs to have real flaws

He even compares the nerubian city to Stormwind, saying that at their core they aren't that different. The Vizier mentions the two of them talked about a wide range of topics. We see it's easy for him to make friends and encourage cooperation. That's always where his true power was.

Furthermore, those qualities are again shown to be one of Anduin's greatest strengths. He hears there might be Arathi in Khaz Algor, and he seeks them out, aids them, and makes an effort to connect with its people and their culture. Later Anduin meets the Vizier and finds personhood in the nerubians

Through the whole campaign Anduin remains a sensitive, emotionally intelligent person, and the narrative treats this with respect. In particular the cinematic about relighting the Dawntower, it felt sweet and earnest. A genuine moment of connection and healing between Faerin and Anduin.

It fits in with the times Anduin talks about blaming himself for things he can't control. I know he's talking about Mawduin, but it fits with this stuff too. It's not my fault that my body was fucked over by a novel virus, and in the same way Anduin isn't responsible for the Light ditching him.
